We are seeking a Legal and Compliance Officer based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The successful candidate will provide compliance expertise and support to the Legal and Compliance Manager by ensuring legislative, statutory and governance requirements are met. The role will implement an effective compliance management framework and ensure that policies and processes comply with applicable laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Provide compliance expertise and support to the Legal and Compliance Manager to ensure compliance with legislation, governance requirements, and regulatory obligations.
• Manage and maintain the contracts register; attend to contract reviews and renewals; report monthly on contract status.
• Coordinate licensing, approvals and consents required from regulatory authorities; ensure licences are up to date and renewals are submitted on time.
• Monitor licence conditions and perform relevant reporting; liaise with regulatory bodies as necessary.
• Draft advanced reports and correspondence to third parties; respond confidently to inquiries and investigations from external and internal parties.
• Provide compliance advice to Management to ensure adherence to legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Assist with the implementation, compliance, and monitoring of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
• Stay updated on evolving best practices and provide guidance on achieving and maintaining compliance with relevant legislation and policies, in plain language.
• Assist with developing the Compliance Framework and Procedures and monitoring mechanisms.
• Ensure internal controls provide reasonable assurance of regulatory compliance and monitor external regulatory requirements.
• Identify gaps arising from new regulations and implement remedial actions to close gaps.
• Research risk areas, mitigate identified risks, and ensure compliance with applicable regulations, policies and best practices.
• Review critical business policies from a regulatory perspective and recommend improvements.
• Assist with the design and development of an annual compliance monitoring plan; conduct regular internal compliance audits.
• Identify, investigate, and report issues from compliance audits; lead investigations and remediation promptly and effectively.
• Track and assist with remedial actions following compliance findings or breaches; escalate significant issues to Management.
• Assist with preparations for independent compliance reviews and external audits.
• Ensure technical accuracy of policy documents through research and training; implement standards, policies, and procedures to govern compliance.
• Drive compliance awareness and foster a compliance culture through training and awareness initiatives when necessary.

Qualifications

• Diploma/Degree
• 1 - 2 years’ experience in a similar role
• Solid understanding of applicable gambling legislation and Data Protection legislation; ability to stay updated on changes
