Legal Advisor

An exciting opportunity exists for a skilled Legal Advisor to join a leading Renewable Energy team in South Africa. Based in Cape Town, you will provide legal support across the full lifecycle of utility-scale renewable energy projects – from early-stage development through to construction and operations.

Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, including project development, construction, asset management, and finance, you will play a vital role in enabling strategic growth across multiple clean energy initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide proactive legal advice and support to project teams
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of legal documents, including:
    - Confidentiality agreements, MOUs, term sheets
    - Joint development agreements, shareholder agreements
    - EPC and O&M contracts, land use agreements
    - Asset acquisition and sale agreements, SPAs, and project finance contracts
    Support legal documentation for tender submissions and awarded projects
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and internal corporate policies
  • Coordinate external legal counsel in line with internal governance processes
  • Track and respond to legal claims and disputes
  • Maintain legal databases and reporting tools
  • Contribute to training, policy development, and knowledge sharing across the business
  • Foster a culture of integrity, compliance, and collaboration

Qualifications and Experience

  • LLB or BCom Law, with further studies in business (advantageous)
  • 5 to 6 years of legal experience, ideally with exposure to IPP power or renewable energy projects in South Africa
  • Experience within a commercial or finance legal environment (multinational exposure beneficial)
  • Strong drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
  • Fluent in English
