Job description
Introduction

The Western Cape Provincial Parliament (WCPP) invites suitably qualified and experienced individuals to apply for the position of Legal Adviser within the Legal Support Unit. This role reports to the Senior Legal Adviser and is responsible for providing professional legal support to the WCPP, including the Office of the Speaker, the Administration, and Parliamentary Committees.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide legal advisory and support services to the WCPP.
  • Draft and review contracts and other legal instruments.
  • Conduct statutory interpretation and legal research.
  • Provide guidance on governance, compliance, and litigation matters.
  • Communicate legal concepts clearly to non-legal stakeholders.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.
  • Admission as a legal practitioner in terms of the Legal Practice Act, 2014.
  • At least five (5) years’ cumulative post-admission experience as an attorney and / or advocate.
  • Proven ability to draft high-quality legal opinions.

  • Sound knowledge of legal principles, South African statutes, and case law.
  • Understanding of government and parliamentary systems and procedures.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and research skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • High levels of integrity, confidentiality, and service orientation.
  • Adherence to professional legal ethics.
  • Subscribe to the values and principles referred to in sections 1 and 195 of the Constitution.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • A short legal opinion (not older than one year) personally drafted by the applicant on a subject of their choice (maximum five pages).
