Job description

The Wits School of Education seeks applications for the role of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Drama in Education, specialising in all levels of schooling – Foundation Phase, Intermediate Phase, Senior Phase, and Further Education and Training. We are looking for a highly qualified professional with outstanding academic credentials in the pedagogy and practice of Drama Education, Applied Drama, Theatre techniques, and Dance and Movement pedagogy.

The ideal candidate should possess adaptability and versatility to contribute to our initial teacher education programmes, postgraduate offerings, research initiatives, and community engagement activities across these three core areas. Our mission is to cultivate a transformative learning environment that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and social awareness through drama in education. Applicants should demonstrate excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement, with a commitment to promoting innovative approaches in Drama Education. Job Description
  1. Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Drama in Education, Applied Drama, Theatre techniques, and Dance and Movement pedagogy.
  2. Develop innovative curriculum and instructional materials.
  3. Supervise and mentor postgraduate students at Honours, Master’s, and Ph.D. levels.
  4. Conduct original research and publish scholarly works.
  5. Participate in community outreach programs.
  6. Collaborate with internal/external stakeholders.
Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate must meet the following criteria to be appointed:

Lecturer Level
  • Academic Qualifications: Ph.D. in Drama in Education, Applied Drama, Theatre Techniques, and Dance and Movement.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Knowledge of theories and practices in Drama in Education and Drama Pedagogy.
  • Familiarity with current trends, research, and developments in Drama in Education and initial teacher education curriculum development.
  • Ability to contribute to curriculum innovation, design, and implementation across all phases.
  • Teaching Capabilities: Expertise in designing engaging, experiential curricula and instructional strategies, mentoring pre-service teachers, and employing various delivery modes with proficiency in digital technology.
  • Relevant Experience: At least 5 years of teaching experience in Foundation/Intermediate Phase contexts, experience in Higher Education is advantageous, research capability, supervision experience, and teamwork skills.
Senior Lecturer Level
  • Academic Qualifications: Ph.D. in Drama in Education and/or Movement Studies.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Knowledge of Drama in Education, Applied Drama, Theatre Techniques, and Dance and Movement.
  • Familiarity with current trends and curriculum development in Drama Education.
  • Teaching Capabilities: Ability to lead curriculum innovation, design experiential curricula, model teaching techniques, mentor students, and adapt pedagogy using educational technologies.
  • Relevant Experience: Minimum of 5 years in relevant teaching contexts, 3 years in Higher Education, established research profile, supervision record, and effective collaboration skills.
Additional Details
  • Coordinate and lead Drama in Education courses.
  • Participate in academic administration and governance.
