Job Description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Teaching, research and community engagement in the field of Early Childhood Development and Education by offering Afrikaans as Home and First Additional Language. Added to this also the presentation of Mathematics (with Afrikaans as the language of instruction) modules in the BEd Foundation Phase in both contact and distance modes. Furthermore, to provide support in Afrikaans to the BEd in Early Childhood Care and Education. Finally, to contribute to research and scholarship in Afrikaans language education in the ECDE field at postgraduate level.

  • Teaching Afrikaans Home and First Additional Language and Mathematics (with Afrikaans as language of instruction) undergraduate modules in the subject group– mainly in contact/hybrid mode but also via distance.
  • Programme development
  • Development of new modules and study material in Early Childhood Development and Education for Afrikaans HL and FAL (and support with Mathematics per Afrikaans offering) in the different programmes offered.
  • Research and supervision
  • Research and Honours supervision in the field of ECDE, Afrikaans Education, and language development, with appropriate publications. Furthering of own qualification on master’s or doctoral level in language in ECDE.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Master’s degree (NQF level 9) in ECDE/Afrikaans for Education/ Learner Support or equivalent.
  • A professional teacher’s qualification (NQF level 6 or higher) in Foundation Phase or equivalent (this includes evidence of rerouting to ECDE).
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience of ECDE practice Teaching in Afrikaans Home Language in an ECDE school environment or equivalent.

Functional / Technical Competencies (knowledge And Skills)

  • Knowledge, skills, and expertise in teaching in different modes of delivery to ensure quality teaching and learning practices and experiences (recommended)
  • Excellent command of Afrikaans and language proficiency to function in a multilingual environment. (Essential)
  • Knowledge, skills, and expertise in teaching Afrikaans in the Foundation Phase and/or ECCE (desirable)
  • Knowledge and skills in training pre-service teachers to teach Afrikaans as a Home and First Additional Language and Mathematics with Afrikaans as the LOLTA in multilingual environments (recommended)
  • Knowledge and skills on how to integrate Afrikaans Home Language, Mathematics and Life Skills to develop learners’ holistic language proficiencies (essential)
  • Knowledge and skills on how to adjust pedagogy to teach Afrikaans at Home Language and First Additional Language levels (essential).
  • Knowledge, skills and expertise in developing and designing assessment practices that ensure quality training of pre-service Foundation Phase teachers (recommended)
  • Computer proficient – command of Word, Power Point and Excel. Experience with a tertiary LMS (preferably eFundi) and online teaching platforms (recommended).
