LECTURER IN PSYCHOLOGY (CLINICAL)

The Department focuses on developing critical conceptual skills and an in-depth understanding of the discipline of Psychology. The purpose of studying psychology is ultimately not only to gain insight into the fascinating field of human behaviour but also to learn how to apply this knowledge in our personal lives and in various professional contexts.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will be expected to:

  • Engage in teaching, curriculum development, and co-ordination of programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Supervise postgraduate research commensurate with the post level;
  • Supervise practical work in the MA (Clinical Psychology) programme, commensurate with the post level;
  • Conduct research commensurate with the level of appointment and actively contribute to the Department’s research profile;
  • Perform various academic and administrative duties as determined by the Head of Department;
  • Participate in the Department’s strategic initiatives (including transdisciplinary engagements) relating to teaching, research, and community engagement.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology;
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Clinical Psychologist;
  • The equivalent of 2 years’ tertiary teaching experience, including block and/or temporary teaching, or relevant professional/industry experience;
  • Evidence of research productivity (e.g. publications in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in peer-reviewed books, published conference papers, or equivalent recognised research outputs; significant progress in PhD studies).

Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge, And Behavioural Attributes)

  • Professional practice experience as a Clinical Psychologist;
  • Proven ability to lecture and supervise student psychologists in psychodynamic psychotherapy, narrative psychotherapy, systemic therapeutic approaches or African epistemologies;
  • Ability to lecture in at least two, but preferably more, of the following areas: introductory psychology, biological psychology, cognitive psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, psychopathology, community psychology, critical psychology;
  • Demonstrated research focus aligned with departmental thematic areas.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES

  • Registration with the HPCSA as a Clinical Psychologist for 3 years or more;
  • Experience in lecturing or professional training at the postgraduate (MA) level;
  • A doctoral degree

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
