Job summary

The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that educates the students across multiple disciplines including Accounting, Finance, Management, Economics, Industrial Psychology (Human Resources Management), Information Systems, Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS), Institute for Social Development, Political Studies, School of Government (including Public Administration) and the Academic Literacies Progamme.

The Department of Economics is building its teaching and research capacity in the areas of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Quantitative Economics. In addition to teaching those core sub-disciplines at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the Department also has to provide research supervision in these areas to postgraduate students. In terms of its vision to become a leading Economics Department that operates at the forefront of the knowledge economy in a digital age in sub-Saharan Africa, the Department has a strong preference for applicants with research experience in the application of economic principles to the formulation of economic or public policy in South Africa and the rest of the African continent.

The successful candidate will be appointed in the Department of Economics, and as part of the Extended Curriculum Programme, will be responsible for the following key performance areas:

• Facilitate learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Microeconomics , Macroeconomics and Quantitative Literacy Skills for Commerce
• Conduct research and publish
• Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate supervision
• Provideacademicleadership and administration
• Undertake curriculum development and assessment
• Participate in community engagement and outreach
• Conduct academic administration
• Masters qualification or equivalent in the field of Economics
• At least two years relevant experience in facilitating learning in at least one of the following, Microeconomics or Macroeconomics or Quantitative Economics
• At least one accredited publication
• Active involvement in at least one community engagement activity relevant to the discipline
• Involvement in institutional service activities, such as course coordination, committee work, curriculum planning, events planning or student support initiatives
• Demonstrated early-stage engagement in academic or professional networks reflecting academic citizenship

Added Advantages

• Currently registered for a PhD in Economics
• Honours or Masters postgraduate supervision experience
• Demonstrated competence in data analysis specialised software packages (e.g. E-Views, Stata, R)
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
