Job description

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

  1. Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in reproductive health across different species;
  2. Providing clinical service at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, including participation in a 24-hour service;
  3. Supervising postgraduate students where appropriate;
  4. Conducting research and publishing in scientific journals;
  5. Engaging with owners, breeders, farmers, and relevant industry stakeholders;
  6. Performing administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department;
  7. Engaging in academic self-development.
Minimum Requirements

For Lecturer:

  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) or registration within a reasonable timeframe;
  • Willingness to register for a Masters program – MMedVet degree (Gyn) or MSc veterinary science (with a focus on reproduction), and graduate in a reasonable time;
  • At least three years of veterinary clinical experience in reproduction (case log required);
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.

For Veterinary Nurse:

  • A Bachelor's degree (BVet Nursing or BSc) or equivalent veterinary nurse qualification;
  • Registration as a Veterinary Nurse with SAVC;
  • An MSc degree focusing on companion or production reproduction;
  • Minimum five years of veterinary nursing clinical experience (case log required);
  • At least five peer-reviewed papers as senior or co-author.
Required Competencies
  • Proven knowledge and competence in veterinary clinical work, especially in reproduction;
  • Research interests aligned with the position;
  • Commitment to obtaining a PhD if not already held, within a reasonable timeframe;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Proficiency with presentation, word processing, and spreadsheet software.
Added Advantages
  • Experience with assisted reproduction technologies, such as gamete cryopreservation;
  • Experience supporting clinical and research aspects of an IVF program;
  • Experience in tertiary teaching and mentoring;
  • Exposure to research in relevant fields.
Salary Details

The annual remuneration will depend on the level of appointment, according to UP policy guidelines.
