Position Overview
The University of Pretoria invites applications for a Lecturer position in the Medicinal Plant Science team at the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences. Join one of South Africa’s leading research universities, renowned for its commitment to excellence, innovation, and diversity.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Teaching undergraduate modules in Biology, Plant Science, and Medicinal Plant Science, as well as Honours modules in Medicinal Plant Science. Teaching includes presentation of lectures and practicals;
- Supervising postgraduate students while developing a robust research program in frontier approaches to Medicinal Plant Science and sustainable utilization of South Africa’s biodiversity;
- Contributing to community engagement projects that align with departmental goals.
Minimum Requirements
- Relevant PhD degree in the Plant Sciences with a focus on Medicinal Plant Science, Phytochemistry, Plant Chemical Ecology or a related discipline;
- A minimum of one (1) year teaching experience at undergraduate level;
- Evidence of postgraduate supervision;
- Research output, research skills and/or a proven record of research publications in accredited journals, and presentation at local conferences;
- Intent to obtain a National Research Foundation (NRF) rating in the next five years;
- Valid driver's license.
Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge And Behavioural Attributes)
- Proficiency in English with the ability to function effectively in a multi-lingual environment;
- Good interpersonal skills;
- Conflict management skills;
- Advanced computer literacy and proficient in the use of MS Office computer applications;
- Good knowledge of statistical analyses;
- Ability to seek out funding opportunities and successfully apply for funding.
Added Advantages And Preferences
- An NRF rating;
- Research experience in plant tissue culture, plant physiology or data science;
- Postdoctoral experience;
- Completion of a formal University-level teaching training programme;
- Evidence of successful funding applications;
- Supervision of postgraduates that have graduated;
- Verifiable community engagement activities.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
