Job description

Clifton Nottingham Road invites applications for a Learning Support/Remedial Specialist.

Clifton Preparatory School is an independent, co-educational school offering classes from Grade 000 to Grade 7, with the option of weekly and termly boarding. Founded in 1942, the school is set on a picturesque 64-hectare estate in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
We are seeking an innovative and passionate Learning Support/Remedial Specialist to join our dynamic in-house Learning Support

Team. The successful candidate will provide academic and emotional support to Junior and Senior Primary children, as well as manage individual learning profiles. This role is a unique opportunity to inspire both children and colleagues, working collaboratively in a supportive and forward-thinking environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching small group Literacy and Numeracy lessons during the school day to children who require support.
  • Providing in-class academic support.
  • Providing afternoon academic support.
  • Keeping records of planning and progress tracking.
  • Writing reports.
  • Providing emotional support to children as needed.
  • Supporting teachers in managing children with academic and emotional difficulties.
  • Assessing children to determine their needs and implementing appropriate support.
  • Managing individual learning support profiles; liaising with teachers, therapists, and parents to identify and effectively support learning difficulties.
  • Arranging and overseeing exam concessions.
  • Attending staff, phase, round table and specialist meetings.
  • Working in close collaboration with the learning support coordinator as well and phase heads.

Requirements:

  • An appropriate university teaching degree and professional qualification in remedial and/or inclusive education / speech and language therapy / occupational therapy / psychology.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience working with children who have barriers to learning, as a remedial teacher or therapist in a primary school setting.
  • An understanding of and passion for children who learn differently.
  • Experience in providing emotional support to primary school children.
  • Experience in administering standardised tests.
  • The ability to manage individual learning profiles.
  • A sound understanding of the strategies and latest research to assist children with barriers to learning, and to support teachers of mixed-ability classes.
  • A progressive understanding of CAPS across the Junior and Senior Primary phases.
  • Knowledge of the implementation of concessions and accommodations for exams in the senior primary.
  • The ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, working closely with teachers and therapists.
  • A proven record of innovation, commitment and professionalism, with a dynamic and motivated approach to education.
  • SACE registration.
  • A police clearance and a sexual offenders clearance certificate.
  • Excellent communication skills, organisational skills, and computer literacy skills.
  • Familiarity with the Time2Read and NumberSense programmes would be advantageous.
