Job description

The role of the AEON Director is to provide overall leadership and vision to the Africa-Earth Observatory Network (AEON), a leading transdisciplinary Earth Stewardship Science Research Institute. The Director is responsible for guiding strategic initiatives, developing collaborations, and ensuring the institute's research aligns with its mission to explore sustainability for people and the planet, particularly in Africa.

Key Responsibilities include:

  1. Strategic planning and execution of initiatives supporting AEON's growth and alignment with institutional and global environmental strategies.
  2. Development of research proposals and securing funding.
  3. Stakeholder engagement at local, national, and international levels.
  4. Supervision of postgraduate students and research staff.
  5. Expansion and development of AEON membership and partnerships.
  6. Ensuring compliance with AEON's vision, mission, and objectives.
  7. Facilitating community engagement, teaching, research, and outreach activities.
  8. Reporting to university leadership and representing AEON in various forums.
  9. Securing funding and leading recruitment efforts for the institute.

Core Competencies required:

  1. Strategic thinking and ability to foster transdisciplinary research.
  2. Expertise in geophysics or geology at a continental scale.
  3. Knowledge of marine geoscience, exploration geophysics/geology, and numerical modelling.
  4. Proven leadership, research, and publication record.
