Placements24 is seeking a Lead Sound Designer to spearhead sound design for cutting-edge theatrical productions and interactive installations in Midrand, Gauteng. You will conceptualize, design and implement immersive soundscapes, collaborating with directors, composers and technical teams to elevate live performances.

The role requires a strong portfolio in theatrical sound design, proficiency with DAWs, and a deep knowledge of acoustics and audio hardware.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Sound Designer with a strong portfolio.
• Expertise in DAWs: Pro Tools, Logic Pro or Ableton Live.
• Proficiency in sound editing, mixing and mastering techniques.
• Knowledge of audio hardware: mics, mixers, speakers, signal processing.
• Experience with live sound reinforcement and theatre systems.
• Strong understanding of acoustics and psychoacoustics.
• Excellent communication, collaboration and leadership skills.
• Ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute creative sound design concepts for theatre and entertainment projects.
• Oversee end-to-end sound design from concept to final implementation.
• Collaborate with directors, choreographers, composers and lighting designers.
• Source, record, edit and mix dialogue, effects and ambience.
• Operate and maintain sound systems and equipment to ensure high-quality output.
• Manage sound budgets and procurement of equipment and software.
• Mentor and guide junior sound engineers and technicians.
• Keep up with trends in sound design and audio production.
• Perform site visits and assessments for venues around Midrand, Gauteng.

Requirements

• Proven experience as a Sound Designer, with a strong portfolio showcasing a range of theatrical or performance‑based projects.
• Expertise in digital audio workstations (DAWs) such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, or Ableton Live.
• Proficiency with sound editing, mixing, and mastering techniques.
• In‑depth knowledge of audio hardware, including microphones, mixers, speakers, and signal processing.
• Experience with live sound reinforcement and theatre sound systems.
• Strong understanding of acoustics and psychoacoustics.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
• A degree in Sound Design, Audio Engineering, Music Technology, or a related field is preferred.
• Familiarity with IP network audio systems and Dante is a plus.
