Job description

Overview

The Flu lab in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology is recruiting a Chief Research Scientist to lead and drive innovative research initiatives aimed at understanding influenza virus biology and advancing vaccine development. This role requires a strong background in virology, immunology, and vaccine science, along with proven leadership and mentorship skills. The Senior Research Scientist will design and execute complex research projects, analyze and interpret data, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to contribute to significant advancements in public health.

Responsibilities
  • Design and implement cutting-edge research projects to explore influenza pathogenesis and improve vaccine strategies, utilize advanced statistical and bioinformatics tools to analyze experimental data, drawing insights that inform future research directions.
  • Oversee project timelines and resource allocation, addressing potential challenges to ensure successful completion of research goals ;lead and mentor junior researchers, fostering a collaborative environment that encourages scientific inquiry and professional growth.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships for collaborations with national and international stakeholders; continue to write and submit competitive grant proposals to secure funding for research initiatives and manage project budgets effectively.
  • Ensure adherence to all biosafety and regulatory guidelines in laboratory practices and research activities; Maintain accurate and comprehensive laboratory records and documentation.
  • Participate in outreach activities to educate stakeholders and the public on influenza research and vaccination efforts.
Qualifications

Education requirement: Ph.D. in Virology, Immunology, or a related field with a focus on infectious diseases.

Technical/computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook

Prior experience: Extensive experience in research related to influenza viruses and vaccine development.

Other skills/requirements:

Proven track record of leading research projects and securing funding.

Strong analytical skills and proficiency in statistical and bioinformatics tools.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines.

Physical demands: May need to carry shipments received inside the lab.

Environmental demands: May be in contact with pathogens
