Our client, a leading industrial conglomerate, is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Lead Environmental Lawyer to oversee all environmental legal matters for their operations in Rustenburg, North West . This critical role involves advising on a wide range of environmental laws and regulations, managing compliance, and mitigating legal risks associated with the company's extensive industrial activities. Key Responsibilities

• Provide expert legal advice and strategic guidance on all aspects of South African environmental legislation, including EIA processes, waste management, water use licensing, and pollution control.
• Develop and implement comprehensive environmental compliance programs to ensure adherence to all national, provincial, and local environmental laws and permits.
• Review and advise on environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and related documentation for new projects and expansions.
• Represent the company in environmental legal proceedings, including negotiations with regulatory authorities and litigation.
• Draft, review, and negotiate environmental-related contracts and agreements.
• Conduct due diligence on environmental aspects of potential acquisitions and divestitures.
• Stay abreast of evolving environmental laws and regulations and advise on their impact on the business.
• Manage and oversee the work of external environmental law consultants and counsel.
• Promote environmental awareness and best practices throughout the organization.

Requirements

• Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
• A minimum of 10 years of post-qualification experience, with a significant focus on environmental law.
• Demonstrated expertise in mining, industrial, and land-use environmental regulations.
• Proven track record in advising on complex environmental compliance and permitting matters.
• Experience in representing clients in environmental litigation and administrative proceedings.
• Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
