About the Role
Our client, a leading player in the Oil & Gas exploration and production sector, is actively seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Drilling Fluids Engineer. This critical role will oversee all aspects of drilling fluid systems for diverse operational sites, ensuring optimal performance, safety, and environmental compliance. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and supervising advanced drilling fluid programs tailored to specific geological formations and drilling challenges. This is a hands-on, field-centric position requiring extensive knowledge and a proactive approach. The role is based in Tembisa, Gauteng, ZA, and requires a full-time commitment on-site to manage the complexities of drilling operations. We are looking for an individual with a proven track record in managing complex fluid systems and a deep understanding of the operational demands within the South African energy industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement comprehensive drilling fluid programs for various drilling projects, considering geological conditions, wellbore stability, and formation pressures.
- Supervise and mentor drilling fluids technicians and junior engineers on-site, ensuring adherence to company standards and best practices.
- Conduct regular site visits to monitor fluid performance, analyze samples, and make necessary adjustments to fluid properties.
- Troubleshoot drilling fluid-related problems, such as lost circulation, wellbore instability, and stuck pipe, and implement effective solutions.
- Manage inventory of drilling fluid chemicals and equipment, ensuring cost-effectiveness and timely procurement.
- Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental regulations related to drilling fluid management and disposal.
- Collaborate with drilling engineers, geologists, and other project personnel to optimize drilling operations and minimize non-productive time.
- Prepare detailed reports on fluid performance, inventory, and costs for management review.

- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related scientific field.
- A minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience in drilling fluids engineering, with a significant portion in a lead or supervisory capacity.
- In-depth knowledge of drilling fluid systems, properties, and additives.
- Experience with high-pressure/high-temperature (HPHT) drilling environments is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of wellbore mechanics and fluid-geology interactions.
- Proficiency in laboratory testing of drilling fluids and interpretation of results.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make critical decisions under pressure.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to remote operational sites.
- Knowledge of South African drilling regulations is a plus.
