Lead Data Engineer – Johannesburg – R1.2mil up to R1.5mil per annum

An international client is seeking a hands-on Lead Data Engineer to join a growing Engineering team. This is a high-impact role where you'll shape and scale our data platform to power strategic initiatives across the business. Reporting directly to the CTO, you'll collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to unlock data-driven insights that fuel decision-making and innovation. As one of the early hires in the platform team, you'll work closely with our Platform Engineer and Head of Engineering to build the foundations of a robust, scalable data infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

1. Work with the CTO, CRO and other stakeholders to build a data engineering strategy that enables the company to meet its ambitious goals.
2. Scale and build out our data platform (data lake, ingestion pipelines, BI and reporting platform capabilities).
3. Deploy data and the data infrastructure to support projects such as CRM, personalisation and Martech innovations.
4. Act as a technical authority, sharing your experience to establish data best practices in our engineering and wider team.
5. Continually seek out and share ways to improve our processes, platform, and culture.

Qualifications and Experience:

1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
2. Experience and proficiency in data architecture, having architected and built:

Data warehouses:

1. Event driven architectures and event ingestion pipelines.
2. Integrations with 3rd party SaaS platforms, e.g. Salesforce, Hubspot.
3. Programming: Python / Typescript.
4. Cloud: AWS - S3, Athena, DMS, Lambda, IAM, CDK.
5. Big data and ETL: Spark, Glue, Airflow, DBT.
6. Streaming and Events: Kinesis, Kafka, Event Bridge.
