Job description

Ensure samples are prepared, processed, and analyzed according to established methods and procedures in support of quality and management systems.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Performing tests
  • Accurately handle, store, retain, and dispose of samples according to prescribed procedures.
  • Prepare and supervise preparation of samples for analysis.
  • Perform routine analysis on samples following standard methods and procedures.
  • Operate instruments according to specified procedures.
  • Maintain records of maintenance, working conditions, and quality control measures.
  • Follow good laboratory practices; clean up spills immediately and do not mess on apparatus or instruments.
  • Adhere to competency training programs and keep skills up to date.
  • Assist in other sections as communicated, performing tasks and analysis for which competency has been declared.
  • Perform any other reasonable tasks assigned by the line manager.
  • Planning of tests and evaluation of results under supervision
    • Plan activities based on sample volume and received quantities.
    • Ensure customer service requirements for testing/analysis are met.
    • Monitor and control stock levels of chemicals and consumables.
    • Evaluate results against quality control specifications.
    • Adhere to sample turnaround timeframes.
  • Quality System
    • Follow all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
    • Perform tests on quality control samples according to standard methods.
    • Record results accurately on QC charts and reports.
    • Evaluate results and report deviations from norms immediately.
    • Keep records of all control and reference sample results.
    • Participate in proficiency testing and submit results timely.
    • Investigate non-conformances, customer complaints, and improvement requests.
  • Reporting opinions and interpretations under supervision
    • Document all relevant sample information.
    • Report results on SLIMS and designated worksheets.
    • Calculate and record all analytical results, ensuring traceability as per ISO 17025.
  • Method modification and development under supervision
    • Perform analysis and report results for method and instrument validation.
    • Report shortcomings and deviations; implement improvements for methods and procedures.
    • Ensure finalization of method validation and related work.
  • Health & Safety System
    • Follow all safety requirements of the SGS management system.
    • Participate in safety activities and wear protective clothing.
    • Adhere to HSE procedures and protocols.
    • Understand chemical hazards via MSDS.
    • Keep the workplace tidy and perform safety inspections.
    • Support operations and promote staff morale.
  • Specific Authorities
    • Cease unsafe equipment use or hazardous environment entry without proper knowledge and protection.
    • Stop work affecting service quality and address issues promptly.
    • Initiate improvement requests when deviations or non-conformances occur.
  • Qualifications: Education
    • Appropriate tertiary qualification or part thereof, or Grade 12 with relevant experience.
    • Qualification in Chemistry or Food Technology (National Diploma or B Sc.).
  • Experience
    • Relevant experience aligned with the duties described above.
    • Must not be color blind.
