Skills and Experience
- Matric certificate and registered as a medical laboratory assistant with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
- At least 2 years’ experience in a medical laboratory environment.
Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities
- Assist with the preparation and issue of practical class material, including media, stains, and reagents.
- Prepare equipment for use in the practical laboratories.
- Ensure that laboratory safety regulations are maintained.
- Storage and disposal of chemicals, reagents, media, and specimens in accordance with safety regulations.
- Store keeping - monitor stock and consumable levels and ensure correct storage requirements are maintained. Maintain inventories of all assets in the laboratories.
- Housekeeping – cleaning of all used equipment and glassware.
- General maintenance of small laboratory equipment and the laboratory environment and working surfaces.
- Photocopying – preparation of notes and other required documentation for lecturers and staff required.
- General minor maintenance – check the lockers and keys; help with carrying of any heavy materials; assist with maintenance of equipment.
