KITCHEN ASSISTANT POSITION - HAVEN OLD AGE HOME

The Haven Night Shelter Organisation’s method is to offer social work services, rehabilitation opportunities, family reunification services, physical care and support to adult people living on the streets who are committed to reintegration.

The Haven Night Shelter requires the services of a Kitchen Assistant for our Haven Old Age Home at Woodstock, Cape Town. The successful applicant will report directly to the manager.

Minimum Duties

The Kitchen Assistant will be responsible for:

• Properly cleaning and sanitising all food preparation areas according to established standards of hygiene.
• Washing and appropriately storing all cooking appliances, instruments, utensils, cutting boards, and dishes.
• Preparation of meal ingredients, which includes washing, cleaning, peeling, cutting, and chopping fruit, vegetables, poultry, and meat.
• Sweeping and mopping the kitchen floors as well as wiping down kitchen walls.
• Assisting with the unloading of delivered food supplies.
• Organizing and correctly storing food supplies.
• Promptly transferring meal ingredients from storage areas to the kitchen as per the cook's instructions.

Minimum Requirements

Reside in the area close to the shelter or in the surrounding areas. Candidates should have a chef's diploma or professional cookery certificate/food preparation programs obtained through an accredited chef's school, with a minimum of 1 year of previous kitchen work experience. Ability to work shifts and alternate weekends is required. Sound knowledge of food safety regulations, understanding the importance of health and safety, and the ability to interact with clients from different cultures and religions are essential. Candidates should also be able to manage conflict situations, possess excellent verbal communication skills, work as part of a team, be of sober habits, have no criminal record, and be in good health. Experience in the NGO sector will be an advantage.
