Job summary

St John’s D.S.G. is seeking a Kitchen Assistant to support the school kitchen operations in Pietermaritzburg. The role requires hands-on cooking, food prep, and ensuring hygienic standards across all areas.

You will collaborate with staff to deliver meals, maintain equipment cleanliness, and follow safety guidelines. The position begins 1 January 2027. The ideal candidate has at least two years of kitchen experience, a relevant qualification, great teamwork, and a clear criminal record.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of Kitchen Assistant experience.
  • Qualification as a Kitchen Assistant.
  • Be engaging, honest, genuine, and kind.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication and collaboration skills.
  • Clear criminal clearance certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the efficient day-to-day operation of the catering department, delivering the highest work standard in all aspects of catering.
  • Take a hands-on approach in every aspect of kitchen work, managing time and working under pressure.
  • Assist as directed with the preparation of food.
  • Ensure a consistently high standard of cleanliness in all areas of work.
  • Ensure compliance with Fire, Health and safety, HACCP & food hygiene regulations.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained to an excellent standard of cleanliness.
  • Assist with the preparation of food for functions and events.

TO QUALIFY TO JOIN OUR SCHOOL AS A KITCHEN ASSISSTANT YOU WOULD:

  • Have a min. 2 years of Kitchen Assistant experience.
  • Have an appropriate qualification as a Kitchen Assistant.
  • Be engaging, honest, genuine, and kind.
  • Have excellent teamwork, communication and collaboration skills.
  • Have strong values that align to the Christian ethos of the school
  • Have a clear criminal clearance certificate.

OUR EXPECTATIONS ARE THAT YOU WOULD:
