Job description

Main job function

1. Authority

  • Identify and report departures from the procedures and protocols in the Quality Management System.
  • Supervise laboratory and general assistants, including part-time workers, in sample reception, handling, processing, housekeeping, hygiene, and other laboratory activities.
  • Supervise the packing of pipette tips and bio tubes in this section.

2. Responsibilities

  • Execute virus assays under the supervision of the senior technologist.
  • Document and record all testing activities related to the duties of an assistant technologist in the virus laboratory.
  • Participate in proficiency testing, interlaboratory, and intra-laboratory testing.
  • Assist in evaluating internationally available test kits under supervision.
  • Verify balances and pipettes according to written procedures.
  • Monitor and record environmental conditions in collaboration with the senior technologist.
  • Assist in supervising and maintaining cleanliness in the laboratory and relevant areas.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as RO systems, incubators, freezers, and cold rooms.
  • Maintain knowledge of test activities, reagents, kits, and equipment to facilitate continuous improvement.
  • Enhance understanding of protocols, procedures, and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
  • Investigate improvements, preventative actions, and risk minimization strategies.
  • Communicate recommendations to supervisors for management consideration.
  • Assist in training laboratory assistants and new staff, including regional laboratory personnel.
  • Assist in planning and organizing the Potato Laboratory Annual Workshop.
  • Ensure effective housekeeping.

3. Duties

  • Perform tests in compliance with the Quality Management System, ISO/IEC 17025, SANAS, and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct routine and diagnostic ELISA tests, including buffer preparation, plate coating, sample loading, washing, and substrate application.
  • Assist in research projects as per project proposals.
  • Liaise with visitors as requested.
  • Attend relevant forums, seminars, and workshops as recommended or requested.

4. Other Duties

  • Stand in for processing G0 tubers.
  • Stand in for washing towels.
