Job Description

Key Role: Primarily functioning as a junior project engineer for transmission and distribution projects.

The candidate should have experience managing or being part of a management team leading projects involved in the conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design of substations with voltages ranging from LV (AC/DC) to kV AC.

Experience with kV AC would be beneficial.

The candidate can be based in Johannesburg or Cape Town.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver complex substation projects up to kV AC.
  • Assist in preparing conceptual or functional designs, specifications, bills of quantity, and tender documents for substation projects (11kV to kV) to internationally accepted standards for clients in Southern Africa and beyond.
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and resources to ensure timely and within-budget project completion.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards such as IEC, IEEE, SANS, and client standards.
  • Coordinate project activities with stakeholders and other disciplines for successful delivery.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and stakeholders, providing updates and addressing concerns.
  • Lead meetings with stakeholders and prepare minutes.
  • Prepare cost estimates and budgets to ensure project viability.
  • Review and prepare project scope, methodology, schedules, and budgets for proposals.
  • Maintain relationships with internal divisions, external contractors, and clients.
  • Stay updated with technical quality management procedures, developments, and specifications related to the scope of work.

Health and Safety

Model SHEQ standards and promote a safe working environment. Contribute to SHEQ risk identification and zero harm initiatives. Understand key health and safety impacts on substation construction contracts.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A Degree in Electrical Engineering from an internationally recognized institution.
  • 3-5 years' project engineering experience in transmission and distribution (substations).
  • Working towards professional registration with recognized engineering and project management institutions.
  • Experience with system studies, primary and secondary plant design is advantageous.

Key Competencies and Skills

  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to work remotely and collaborate via software like Microsoft Teams.
  • Strong technical report writing skills.
  • Effective time, quality, and effort management to deliver quality within constraints.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
