Job description

Background : Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides the faculty with a legal framework to operate research and other activities supporting its academic objectives.

Main purpose of the job : To coordinate and manage referral processes for vulnerable participants by supporting their identification, maintaining accurate records, and establishing strong links with local services to ensure they receive appropriate support, including counselling, legal assistance, and access to social services.

Location : School of Public Health, Parktown, Johannesburg

Key performance areas :

  1. Identify adult and child participants with social and health needs such as child maltreatment, sexual violence, and IPV.
  2. Conduct assessments and home visits to evaluate situations.
  3. Provide counselling to families in need of support.
  4. Assist participants in accessing social grants and official documentation.
  5. Monitor ongoing caseloads and address ethical issues, providing regular reports to the project manager.
  6. Refer participants to existing services for long-term or specialist involvement, e.g., HIV testing.
  7. Follow up to ensure cases are managed adequately.
  8. Implement study protocols and contribute to research progress.
  9. Maintain study records per protocol and ensure ethical procedures are followed.
  10. Support research assistants and liaise with health departments, facility managers, and community leaders.
  11. Organise and run debriefing meetings as needed.

Minimum education and training : A Social Work Degree registered with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP).

Minimum work experience : 5 years as a Social Worker.

Desirable additional qualifications and skills :

  • South African Police Service clearance certificate.
  • National Register for Sexual Offenders clearance certificate.
  • Crisis intervention and counselling skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, management, and administrative skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment with attention to detail.
  • Well-organised, problem-solver with sound time-management skills.
  • Professional work ethic, integrity, and willingness to meet deadlines.
  • Clean driver's license (Code B).
  • Availability to work Tuesday to Saturday and travel within South Africa.
  • Fluency in English, isiZulu, and isiXhosa.
