This position is essential to ensure our landscaping projects are complemented by reliable, efficient, and sustainable irrigation systems. The successful candidate will take full ownership of irrigation design, installation, and maintenance, and will play a key role in enhancing the value and performance of our landscaping services.
Overview of Position
The Irrigation Technician will be responsible for managing all irrigation-related work within Delta Landscaping Services. As an irrigation technician, they will lead the design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of irrigation systems across residential and commercial properties. The technician will work closely with the landscaping maintenance team but will carry primary accountability for irrigation projects, ensuring systems are functional, water-efficient, and tailored to client needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Design, install, and maintain irrigation systems for residential and commercial properties.
- Conduct site assessments and prepare irrigation plans and layouts.
- Select appropriate materials, components, and equipment for each project.
- Perform system testing, troubleshooting, and repairs to ensure optimal functionality.
- Train and guide landscaping maintenance staff in basic irrigation upkeep.
- Maintain accurate records of installations, repairs, and service schedules.
- Ensure all work is performed safely, efficiently, and to high-quality standards.
- Communicate professionally with clients to explain system operations, provide advice, and resolve issues.
- Support general landscaping upgrade and maintenance projects (tree felling, garden upkeep, lawn care, etc.) when irrigation work is not required.
- Stay updated on industry trends, technologies, and water-saving methods to continuously improve service delivery.
Experience Required
- Minimum 3–5 years’ proven experience in irrigation system installation and maintenance.
- Strong knowledge of irrigation design principles, hydraulics, and water management.
- Experience working with residential and commercial irrigation systems (manual and automated).
- Hands-on experience with pumps, valves, controllers, and irrigation systems.
- Supervisory or lead role experience is advantageous.
Qualification
- Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent (minimum requirement).
- Trade or technical qualification in irrigation, plumbing, or landscaping (preferred).
- Certification in irrigation design/installation (e.g. SABI or equivalent) will be highly advantageous.
- Health and safety training/certification is beneficial.
- Evidence of continuous professional development in irrigation or related fields will be viewed favourably.

Work Environment

- Certain tasks, such as designing systems, preparing quotes, ordering materials, and client consultations, will be performed from the Delta Landscaping Services office.
- When irrigation projects are not underway, the technician will be expected to contribute to the general landscaping and maintenance team, assisting with tasks such as tree felling, garden maintenance, lawn care, and other related duties.
- The role requires a balance between hands-on technical work, client interaction, and occasional administrative responsibilities.
- Work is outdoors, in varying weather conditions, and may involve physically demanding activities.
