Who are we?

Sanlam was established as a life insurance company in South Africa but has since transformed into a diversified financial services group that operates across the African continent, India, Malaysia and selected developed markets, with listings on the Johannesburg, A2X and Namibian stock exchanges. In 2018 the Group celebrated its centenary as well as 20 years since demutualisation and listing in South Africa and Namibia. Sanlam is one of thelargest internationally active insurance groups in the world with a presence in 31 countries and has the biggest non-banking financial services footprint on the African continent.

The Group's five business clusters (Sanlam Fintech, Sanlam Life and Savings, Sanlam Investment Group, Sanlam Allianz and Santam) house the Group's business operations. The Group Office provides strategic direction and support to the five clusters, assisting them in realising their strategies and meeting their business objectives. The Group Office is responsible for governance and for the Group's centralised functions, which include: Finance, Actuarial, Risk and Balance Sheet Management, Strategy, Human Capital, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability.

What will you do?

Responsible for creating and presenting a consistently applied investment message to the investment community on behalf of the company. Assist in projects aimed at improving investor understanding of Sanlam financial reporting and the Sanlam investment case. Engage with cross-functional teams across the Group to improve and simplifying financial reporting and development of insightful reporting. Benchmark operational and financial performance and suggest areas of potential improvement. Develops investor relations messages based on these changes.

Assist in financial model building for forecasting performance on key financial metrics. Scenario analysis modelling and developing understanding of key drivers of operating performance. Assist senior management in ad-hoc tasks.

Provides feedback to management regarding the investment community’s opinions and perception regarding the company’s performance. Represents the views of the investment community to management in the development of corporate strategy. Maintains a company investor relations plan and creates a mix of shareholders through a variety of targeting initiativesPerforms a comprehensive analysis. Supports the production financial reports. Responsible for supporting the development and execution of the IR strategy, including an effective annual programme of Investor Relations activities, targeting the buy and sell side financial communities across geographies (predominantly South Africa, UK, US and Europe).

What will make you successful in this role?
  • Supporting engagements with the investor community to ensure that Sanlam’s business strategy and strategic progress in understood by the analysis and investor community
  • Support in creating and presenting a consistently applied investment message to the investment community on behalf of the group
  • Monitor operational and financial performance and develop investor relations messages based on these changes.
  • Collate feedback regarding investment community’s opinions and perception regarding the Group’s performance.
  • Maintain company investor relations plan and create a mix of shareholders through a variety of targeting initiatives.
  • Support the production of the interim results announcement, annual integrated report and annual financial statements.
  • Preparation of compelling investor presentations.
  • Contribute to effective results, conference calls and management speeches.
  • Support the management of relationships with analysts, investors and prospective targets, enabling them to understand and fully appreciate the Group’s performance and potential, and thereby ensure that there is a fair reflection of the Group’s value in the share price.

    • Supporting with day to day contact with current and potential institutional investors and sell-side analysts across all relevant geographic markets.
    • Maintaining a knowledge of the actual and potential investor base and the key characteristics of each segment and considering the current weighting
    • Support in identifying new sources of investment into Sanlam
    • Build financial models capturing key metrics for Sanlam and the peer group using Sanlam internal reporting system and publicly available peer disclosures.
    • Assist in automating Investor Relations reporting functions and communications.
  • Leadership and Gravitas
  • Assist in defining and delivering of the strategy for a proactive Investor Relations programme
  • Supporting investor activities and ensuring all elements of the Investor Relations programme are delivered to a consistently high standard
  • Developing a range of key Investor Relations measures and benchmarking company performance against other leading/ competitor companies.
  • Communication & Advisory
    • The role requires strong communication skills in order to build strong relationships through dealing openly, fairly and consistently with individuals across Sanlam and with external parties
    • Consistency of messaging is imperative across the IR/media functions. This role therefore needs to maintain excellent working relationships within the wider communications team to ensure that each member of the team is aware of the latest position on any particular topic.
Qualification and Experience
  • University degree, ideally with some form of post-graduate financial qualification, e.g. MBA, CA (SA), Actuary, CFA
  • Previous Investor Relations or buy and sell side experience will be an advantage
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Market knowledge- candidates should have a good understanding of the investment community in Sanlam’s main market and understanding of the Financial Services sector.
