Accessible academic material for print-impaired students. Scan and convert the study material from various formats into Microsoft Word. Edit to make the converted study material accessible and available for visually impaired and print-impaired students. Reporting to the Print Impaired Access Coordinator.
Key Responsibilities
Human Support Services through Sign Language Interpreting and/or Real-time Captioning. Priority is given to D/deaf or Hard of Hearing student(s) before staff.
Ensure that D/deaf persons are adequately supported in lectures, tutorials, academic meetings, and other university events and that all study-related information is relayed to the D/deaf person.
Promote Disability Awareness through education and awareness drives to broaden knowledge of the Wits community about persons with disabilities.
Educate lecturers on how to make their courses and teaching styles accessible to D/deaf and visually impaired students.
Contact applicants with disabilities during November/December to promote DRU services and offer assistance.
Communicate with print-impaired and D/deaf and hearing-impaired students throughout the year to get feedback.
Facilitate relationships between students & lecturers.
Assist with various administrative work at DRU i.e. invigilation and/or reception duties.
Take part in the Gateway to Success (GTS) Orientation programmes.
Arrange/Coordinate the Disability Interest Group (DIG) meetings – Awareness and information sharing sessions.
Submit monthly and annual reports.
Ad hoc duties - Upon requests by the Head of Department.
Assist students with different services when the person responsible is not around.
Requirements
Matric
Tertiary qualification (A Post-school qualification would be advantageous)
Recognised South African Sign Language training
Three years of work-related experience
Preferences
Experience in a tertiary education environment is desirable
Computer literacy diploma or certificate
Postgraduate qualification would be an advantage
Real-time captioning experience
Skills
Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Knowledge and experience of different software packages used by visually and print-impaired students would be beneficial.
Proficiency in English.
Proficiency in typing.
Experience with working with people with disabilities, including Deaf people.
Understand Deaf culture.
Be able to adapt methodologies for persons with different disabilities.
Be empathetic, understand, and know how to work with people with disabilities.
Ability to behave ethically and maintain confidentiality.
Good interpersonal, communication (both written & verbal), and organisational skills.
