Job summary

PR Wiehahn (Pty) Ltd is seeking an experienced Intermediate Quantity Surveyor to join the Blackheath, Cape Town office. You will own tenders and projects from day one and work with the Senior QS to contribute immediately.

The role is office-based, permanent and full-time, with a focus on tenders, contract administration and cost control. Minimum qualifications include a Quantity Surveying degree and 5+ years’ building QS experience.

Qualifications

• Degree/diploma in Quantity Surveying from a recognised SA institution.
• At least 5 years post-qualification experience as Building QS.
• Contracting experience with main contractor or subcontractor.
• Strong measurement skills and ability to read/interprete drawings.
• Proven track record running tenders from tender to final account.
• Sound knowledge of JBCC contracts, especially Subcontract Agreements.
• Proficient in CCS QTO or similar take-off software.
• Proficient in MS Excel at an advanced level.
• Valid driver’s licence and own transport.
• SA citizen or valid work permit.

Responsibilities

• Assisting with formwork tenders priced from main contractors' BoQ extracts.
• Checking BoQ quantities against tender drawings and adjust quantities as needed.
• Rate build-ups, tender qualifications and tender submissions.
• Post-tender negotiations.
• Managing contracts from award to final account.
• Vetting subcontract agreements and ensuring deliverables.
• Submitting monthly payment claims and following up payments.
• Identifying, pricing and negotiating variations.
• Cost reports, cash flow forecasts and budget tracking.
• Final accounts from close-out to agreement.
• Overseeing labour-only subcontractors and compliance.

PR Wiehahn (Pty) Ltd is one of the major players in the Western Cape formwork industry.

We're big enough to take on substantial building projects, yet small enough that everyone

works closely together as one team. We are looking for an experienced Building Quantity

Surveyor to join our commercial team at our Blackheath office.

About the role

You'll work alongside our Senior Quantity Surveyor and take ownership of your own

tenders and projects from day one. We need a capable, self-driven QS who can contribute

straight away, not someone who still needs training.

Key responsibilities

Tenders

• Assisting with formwork tenders priced from main contractors' tender BoQ extracts
• Checking BoQ quantities against tender drawings, and taking off where quantities aremissing, unclear or wrong
• Rate build-ups, tender qualifications and putting together tender submissions
• Post-tender negotiations

Contract management (main contractor)

• Managing your contracts from award through to final account
• Vetting subcontract agreements and fulfilling all deliverables when the subcontract is awarded
• Applying for construction guarantees
• Contract administration under JBCC Subcontract Agreements (nominated and domestic), including notices, claims and extensions of time
• Submitting monthly payment claims, then following through: chasing payment advices, issuing tax invoices and chasing payment
• Identifying, measuring, pricing, submitting and negotiating variations
• Cost reports, cash flow forecasts and budget-versus-actual tracking on your projects
• Final accounts, from close-out to agreement

Labour-only subcontractors

• Appointing labour-only subcontractors, including agreeing their rates based on the allowables in our own subcontract rates
• Fortnightly measurements and payments to subcontractors
• Checking subcontractors' statutory compliance (e.g. BIBC, FEM/COIDA, UIF , SARS tax compliance, OHS) and policing it throughout the contract

General

• Working with site management on progress, risk and commercial issues

Minimum requirements

• A degree or diploma in Quantity Surveying (BSc / BSc Hons / BT ech / ND) from a recognised South African institution
• At least 5 years' post-qualification experience as a Building QS. Civil engineering QS experience will not be considered.
• Contracting experience, with either a main contractor or a subcontractor
• Strong measurement skills and the ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings
• A proven track record of running tenders and projects on your own, from tender to final account
• Sound working knowledge of the JBCC suite of contracts, particularly the Subcontract Agreements
• Proficient in CCS QTO (Quick Take Off) or similar take-off software
• Proficient in MS Excel, well beyond a basic level
• A valid driver's licence and your own transport
• South African citizen, or a foreign national with a valid South African work permit

Advantageous

• Experience in formwork, concrete or structural subcontract packages
• Experience appointing and managing labour-only subcontractors

• Communicates well with main contractors, consultants, suppliers and site teams

Location

This is a full-time, office-based position at our premises in Blackheath, Cape Town.

Preference will be given to applicants who already live in the Cape T own area. We will

not cover relocation costs.

• Market-related and in line with experience and qualifications.
