Interior Design Lecturer

The Department of Interior Design & Décor seeks to appoint an outstanding individual with a keen interest in teaching Interior Design, someone who can make a lasting impact on the academic and creative life of the Academy. It is essential that candidates have a strong understanding of structural and finishing materials, as well as the spatial and experiential discipline of Interior Design, to develop effective design strategies. The appointee will also contribute to cross-disciplinary projects in innovation and teaching.

The successful candidate will share their vision for enhancing the programme by building on the Academy's existing strengths while also developing new areas of research that are locally and globally relevant.

This role profile is indicative, not prescriptive, and the balance of duties will be in accordance with the employment contract.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning Support

  • Module Development and Delivery: Design, develop, and teach modules across various levels, including new qualifications, ensuring compliance with SAQA, CHE, and Academy standards.

  • Digital Learning and Course Updates: Create and maintain virtual learning environments, regularly reviewing and updating course content.

  • Effective Teaching Techniques: Implement innovative teaching methods and materials to engage students and enhance learning.

  • Practical and Software Instruction: Teach and assess practical skills, software proficiency, and theoretical knowledge at the Diploma level.

  • Departmental and Public Engagement: Contribute to departmental administration, participate in professional meetings, and actively engage as a public intellectual.

Planning and Managing Resources

  • Module Delivery: Ensure module outcomes align with academic regulations and standards.

  • Departmental Contribution: Support departmental management, including budget planning, business strategies, and team collaboration.

  • Strategic Planning: Participate in departmental and institutional strategic planning initiatives.

  • Research and Resource Management: Plan and deliver research or consultancy modules within available resources.

  • Quality and Time Management: Maintain high-quality standards while balancing teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities.

  • Passion and Industry Expertise: Energy, commitment, and a deep understanding of design and décor practices.

  • Communication Skills: Proficiency in written, verbal, and academic English and Afrikaans for effective interaction.

  • Teaching Proficiency: Capability to teach software, theory, and practical applications across diverse design concepts.

  • Student Development: Ability to monitor student performance, provide constructive feedback, and coach professionally.

  • Collaboration and Planning: Strong interpersonal skills for teamwork in multicultural settings, along with meticulous planning and administrative abilities.

Expertise

  • Recognised authority in the field of Interior Design.

  • In-depth understanding of own specialisation to advance knowledge and practice, particularly in software, technical aspects, and design.

  • Proven ability to collaborate with colleagues on shared teaching initiatives at the tertiary level.

Liaison and Networking

  • Participate in internal networks, including Academy subcommittees, to contribute to academic and administrative development.

  • Develop external links with educational institutions, employers, and professional bodies to foster collaboration.

  • Engage with external moderators, suppliers, and manufacturers for industry-related events such as Design Talks.

Initiative, Problem-Solving, and Decision-Making

  • Address challenges related to curriculum delivery in alignment with academic regulations.

  • Make operational decisions regarding the educational programme.

  • Contribute to decisions that impact related curricula.

  • Strategically develop new courses and contribute to programme innovation.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • A proven track record of engagement in the Interior Design industry.

  • A National Diploma or Degree from an accredited educational institution.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit (Adobe Suite proficiency would be advantageous).

  • Previous experience in educational training or assessment would be beneficial.

  • Salary - R15,000.00 - R28,000.00 (Based on experience, skill, and in relation to your current package)
