Job summary

A leading engineering company is seeking a Control and Instrumentation Engineer to manage design, installation, and testing of various control systems. The ideal candidate will have over 5 years of experience in the Petrochemical industry, strong knowledge in DCS/ESD and PLC systems, and a relevant engineering qualification. Responsibilities include leading project teams, conducting acceptance testing, and mentoring junior engineers. This role requires excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure. The position is based in Secunda with travel required.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years’ experience as a C&I Engineer in the Petrochemical industry.
  • Proven track record in basic engineering and design.
  • Eligible for professional registration at the ECSA.

Responsibilities

Purpose of the position

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the design, installation, factory acceptance testing and commissioning process of control systems for a variety of projects and clients. The C&I Engineer will ensure that engineering and service requirements are met across all sites and is technically sound. The major responsibilities of this position are to deliver all control and instrumentation discipline deliverables and ensure that the intent is being carried through the design and all discipline interfaces.

Qualifications / Experience
  • B.Eng./B.Sc. (Electrical/Automation/Electronic/Computer) qualification or equivalent NQF Level 8.
  • 5+ years’ experience as a C&I Engineer in the Petrochemical industry.
  • A proven track record in basic engineering, detail design, commissioning, and operation support.
  • Eligible for professional registration at the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
  • CFSE/CFSP Certified Functional Safet Professional certification will be an advantage.
  • CACE/CACS Certified Automation Cybersecurity Expert certification will be an advantage.
  • Strong knowledge of DCS/ESD (Siemens, ABB, Honeywell, Yokogawa, Emerson) & PLC (Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider, ABB) systems.
  • Strong knowledge of safety & protection systems applications and implementation.
  • Knowledge of HMI & SCADA systems.
  • Knowledge of Fieldbus communication systems (Profibus, Modbus, etc.) will be beneficial.
  • Knowledge of intrinsically safe environments and implementations.
  • Proven track record in Brownfields system replacement engineering and design projects for both DCS, ESD, and field instrumentation upgrades.
  • A good grounding in instrumentation (temperature, flow, pressure, level, etc.) and control element design practices in an intrinsically safe environment.
  • Good knowledge of applicable design codes, standards, and regulations.
Required Outputs and Responsibilities
  • Work in a single- and multi-disciplinary project team to develop control and instrumentation deliverables on Greenfields and Brownfields projects, ensuring that the design intent is met.
  • Conducting Factory and Site Acceptance testing (FAT/SAT) of DCS/ESD systems as well as instruments.
  • Creating Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and Site Acceptance Test (SAT) Files.
  • Work across interfaces with other disciplines and with the client.
  • Participate in MFD (P&ID) reviews, SIL reviews, HAZOP studies, and control/design philosophy review meetings.
  • Review/Produce client design concepts for instrumentation and system engineering projects and technical input for basic and detail design.
  • Execute basic and detailed design for control, instrumentation, and systems engineering projects.
  • Perform technology investigations, technical bid evaluations, and technology selection.
  • Support commissioning and optimization activities.
  • Enable and mentor junior resources through knowledge sharing and deliverable reviews.
