Job description

Applications are invited for the Infrastructure Technician - Senior position to be based in Gqeberha.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

The Infrastructure Technician Senior will be responsible for the construction and maintenance of both wireless and fibre network infrastructure and lead their team in this regard. This will include the installation and configuration of equipment as well as the physical structures to host equipment.

Key Performance Areas include, but are not limited to:

1. Assist in the construction, installation, and maintenance of communication towers, fibre networks, and support structures.
2. Respond to network outages, including highsite outages and fibre network breaks, meeting project deadlines.
3. Climb tall structures (50 meters or more) daily with a load of up to 20kg.
4. Analyze situations to identify risk factors affecting high site performance and maintain safety standards.
5. Perform installation, replacement, and repair of antenna systems/equipment on towers.
6. Build and repair fibre network infrastructure, including expansion and damage repair.
7. Install and maintain various types of cables and connectors.
8. Weatherproof installations.
9. Maintain and repair power equipment and data routers.
10. Follow work instructions and escalate issues as needed.
11. Identify safety hazards and work safely.
12. Communicate effectively with team members and management.
13. Use and maintain hand tools and mechanical equipment.
14. Travel extensively, sometimes at short notice.
15. Erect self-supporting and stayed masts.
16. Lead and mentor less experienced technicians.
17. Plan future infrastructure needs.
18. Perform any ad hoc tasks as required.

Candidate Requirements:

• 2 to 4 years of industry experience.
• Driver's license; off-road driving experience is advantageous.
• Up-to-date medical certificate.
• Completed Working at Heights and Tower Rescue Training.
• Technical inclination and manual labour experience related to site preparation and equipment setup.
• Experience in both fibre and RF fields is advantageous.
• Proficiency with hand tools and mechanical equipment.
• Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
• Knowledge of municipal regulations and by-laws.
• Proficiency with safety equipment, harnesses, and climbing gear.
• Awareness of hazards associated with tower climbing and energized lines.
• Physical fitness to climb towers, carry equipment, and work in various weather conditions.
• Strong analytical, safety awareness, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and independently.
• Maximum combined weight of employee and tools: 125 kg; waist circumference not exceeding 150 cm.
• Intermediate computer skills and understanding of electricity, solar energy, power, and batteries.
• Knowledge of network and RF principles, troubleshooting, hardware, software, routing, and trunking techniques.
• Effective communication skills and task prioritization.

Education Requirements:

• Grade 12 (Maths and Science advantageous).
• OSHA Certification advantageous.
