Job Title: SENIOR CLINICIAN SCIENTIST, AC04 / AC05 (Dependent on current Academic Standing)

Research Professor in The Faculty of Health Sciences (fixed-term, 5 years, renewable based on performance) - AC04 / AC05. The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand seeks to appoint a Research Professor / Senior Clinician Scientist.

The research focus can be in any of the following fields:

  1. Cardiology with a focus on Hypertension and Cardiovascular Prevention
  2. Endocrinology with a focus on Obesity and Diabetes
  3. Immunology, focusing on cellular immunity related to infectious diseases
  4. Lung disease, including childhood and adult respiratory diseases
  5. Oncology, with a focus on Cancer and Infectious Diseases nexus
  6. Maternal and Child Health, addressing stillbirths and premature labour
  7. Infectious Diseases, including antimicrobial resistance, hospital infections, emerging infections, and pandemics

Applicants involved in other health-care research priorities in South Africa will also be considered. The role emphasizes leadership in clinical research and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The Faculty of Health Sciences at Wits is the largest in South Africa, ranked among the top globally in Medicine, with a strong research focus on priority diseases.

Main duties include:

  • Research and publication at an international level
  • Research leadership and supervision of students and staff
  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students (up to 15% effort)

Qualifications:

  • Specialist degree in relevant field; sub-specialty preferred
  • PhD is advantageous but not essential
  • Eligible for appointment as associate or full professor according to faculty criteria
  • South African applicants must be registered with HPCSA; non-South Africans considered without patient service obligations

Applicants must demonstrate high-level original academic production, research management skills, and provide research-based teaching. Good interpersonal and communication skills are required.
