Safety Specialist is responsible for Occupational, Health, Safety, and Environment Management at Air Liquide. They will support the HSE Manager and Facility Managers in maintaining health, safety, and environmental standards and ensuring compliance with regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and communicate a written HSE Policy, including procedures such as inspections, JHA, audits, work permits, and compliance monitoring.
- Assist management in implementing and monitoring HSE programs and objectives.
- Evaluate HSE non-conformities related to group documents, procedures, standards, or local regulations.
- Ensure timely conduct of internal and external audits, and develop action plans.
- Provide expert support and advice on HSE matters to operations management and staff.
- Ensure compliance with South African safety, health, and environmental laws; support subsidiary operations.
- Conduct or coordinate industrial hygiene monitoring as needed.
- Coordinate HSE training for employees and contractors to ensure safety qualification.
- Assist in analyzing safety events and guarantee quality in reporting.
- Support the completion of Safe Work and Life Saving Permits.
- Provide on-the-floor coaching and recognition related to HSE.
- Communicate regularly on HSE topics, KPIs, initiatives, and achievements.
- Participate in hazard analysis, change management, and safety reviews.
- Promote a safety culture and employee engagement in HSE matters.
- Apply global safety best practices in planning and execution.
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or related fields.
- BTech Degree in Chemical/Mechanical Engineering or Safety Management (advantageous).
Experience
- 8+ years supervisory experience in the gas or chemical industry (advantageous).
- Experience in safety audits and compliance.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety standards.
- Experience with safety risks and maintaining relevant accreditations (FSSC, SAHPRA, ISO).
Knowledge and Skills
- Operational experience and understanding of risk management.
- Proficiency with safety risk tools (Fall protection, Permits, JHAs).
- Knowledge of South African legislation (OSHAct, NEMA).
- Familiarity with Air Liquide Group IMS, policies, and standards (added advantage).
