Job Title : HSE Manager

Salary / rate: Market Related

Position overview: To manage health and safety of all employees working on the construction site. To lead, manage, and coordinate Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies and practices for Solar PV projects within South Africa. The HSE Manager ensures compliance with South African legal and regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company policies. The role aims to foster a safe work environment, promote zero harm, by leading and managing on-site HSE resources to ensure compliance.

Qualifications:

  1. Matric Qualification
  2. In position of a suitable HSE accreditation and also registered with SACPCMP in accordance with South African safety regulations
  3. National Diploma in Safety Management NQ6 or Advanced Diploma / Btech in Safety Management at NQ7
  4. Certifications: Registration with the South African Council for Professional and Technical Chemists (SACPCMP) as CHSM / Pr.

Skills and Experience:

  1. Shall have a minimum working experience of 10 years at site execution of photovoltaic project or any other mega construction site, and shall be a specialized professional
  2. 5 to 10 years of experience in managing Health, Safety, and Environment for projects, preferably within the renewable energy or construction sectors.
  3. Proven experience with Solar PV projects in construction phase.
  4. Extensive knowledge of South African health and safety regulations and reporting procedures
  5. Strong written and oral communication
  6. Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  7. Excellent ability to design and implement policies
  8. Ability to work independently with minimal direction or oversight
  9. Strong knowledge of South African HSE regulations, codes, and standards related to Solar PV and construction.
  10. Strong verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in additional South African languages.

Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure that the organization adheres to South Africa's Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), and other relevant regulations.
  2. Develop, implement, and monitor workplace safety plans and procedures.
  3. Conduct risk assessments and safety audits to identify hazards and mitigate risks.
  4. Review and approve risk assessments of contractors and conduct regular safety audits to identify hazards and mitigate risks.
  5. Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  6. Promote workplace health programs, ensuring the wellbeing of employees.
  7. Manage occupational health risks, including ensuring appropriate medical examinations for staff in hazardous environments.
  8. Establish protocols for dealing with health emergencies in the workplace.
  9. Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, such as waste management, pollution control, and resource conservation.
  10. Promote sustainable practices and minimize the environmental impact of company operations.
  11. Manage environmental impact assessments (EIA) and ensure corrective actions are taken.
  12. Conduct or organize training programs for staff and management team on health, safety, and environmental practices.
  13. Raise awareness of HSSE policies and foster a culture of safety within the organization.
  14. Maintain detailed records of safety incidents, audits, and compliance reports.
  15. Prepare and submit mandatory HSSE reports to local authorities and management.
  16. Provide regular HSSE updates to management.
  17. Develop and implement emergency response procedures.
  18. Organize drills and ensure employees are trained in emergency procedures.
  19. Collaborate with senior management to ensure HSSE considerations are integrated into business strategies and operations.
  20. Provide advice on HSSE-related matters during project planning, tender processes, and site operations.
  21. Liaise with regulatory authorities, environmental agencies, and contractors to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.
  22. Manage communication with external bodies in case of incidents or breaches of safety and environmental regulations.
  23. Provides oversight to the new hire safety orientation process and other safety related training.
  24. Ensure to complete any other task or extra assignment given by management on time.
