ABOUT THE ROLE:We are looking for a HR Manager based in our central Cape Town office in Woodstock (with occasional travel requirements to Johannesburg). The role suits someone who thrives in both strategic leadership and execution, is comfortable designing long-term people plans and also rolling up their sleeves to ensure day-to-day excellence.
Critically, the ideal candidate has relevant experience but is also entrepreneurial. You should have seen how HR can be done well, but also have experience and appetite to set up processes and programmes from scratch, in a young and growing organisation.
This role will lead our HR team working across four operational locations, plus a larger number of retail stores, covering several hundred staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic HR Leadership
- Lead and develop the overall HR strategy across all brands in the Silvertree portfolio.
- Act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, supporting decision-making with people insights and planning.
- Design and drive long-term people planning and succession strategies.
- Guide talent planning and embed a strong, unified company culture across business units.
People Operations & Project Delivery
- Drive group-level HR projects such as the rollout of new platforms (e.g., Zoho People), benefits plans (e.g., Pension Fund), and HRIS enhancements.
- Oversee and support payroll compliance across functions.
- Oversee HR Admin support across central office team and operations teams across multiple locations.
Learning & Development
- Lead learning and development initiatives that support career growth, leadership development, and organizational effectiveness.
- Own the design and execution of the performance review cycle, development planning, and training needs analysis.
Retail & Field Engagement
- Provide hands-on HR support to ~80 staff at the central office facility
- Regularly engage with the HR teams based in the operational facilities and related retail teams. This includes employee engagement, performance management, change initiatives, and policy adherence.
- Work closely with retail and warehouse leadership to maintain consistent employee experience and policy execution.
Recruitment & Talent Management
- Oversee the recruitment lead to deliver on current and future hiring needs.
- Build pipelines for key positions, particularly in retail, tech, and leadership roles.
- Manage headhunting for senior positions/executives where needed and contribute to compensation structuring.
Culture & Employee Relations
- Champion initiatives that reinforce our values and culture across brands and locations.
- Actively manage employee relations issues, grievances, and performance concerns in a fair and legally compliant manner.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Strategic thinker who can translate business needs into practical HR initiatives.
- Comfortable with hands-on work: building a contract, leading a workshop, or resolving a personnel issue.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong project management and organisational skills.
- High emotional intelligence and integrity.
- Resilient and proactive with the ability to adapt in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of experience in HR management with exposure to both strategic and operational responsibilities.
- Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional teams and implementing HR projects across medium to large size organizations.
- Proven ability to work independently, make decisions, and problem-solve in complex environments.
- Strong familiarity with South African labour law, HR systems (e.g., SimplePay, BambooHR, Zoho People), and best practices in payroll and benefits.
- Experience supporting retail or distributed teams is advantageous.
