A prominent and well-established South African retail group operating in the fast-paced grocery and fresh market sector.
Based at the Head Office, the Assistant HR Manager acts as a key second-in-command to the HR Manager. This hands-on role oversees day-to-day HR administration and compliance while providing essential operational backup to both the Payroll and HR Generalist functions.
Key Responsibilities- Industrial Relations: Guide line management on routine IR, prepare documentation, assist with disciplinary hearings and grievances, and maintain accurate records.
- Recruitment & Onboarding: Manage end-to-end recruitment, candidate screening, reference checks, contract preparation, and structured employee onboarding.
- Compliance & Reporting: Assist with Employment Equity (EE) planning, EE committee coordination, WSP/ATR submissions, and BBBEE verification documentation.
- HR Administration: Maintain employee records, track probation periods and leave, update HR policies, and compile monthly HR reports.
- Payroll Backup: Independently process and verify monthly payroll, statutory deductions, overtime, leave, and reconciliations whenever required.
- Health & Safety Support: Assist with Health & Safety and Food Safety training records, audit preparations, and compliance monitoring.
Requirements- Grade 12 certificate.
- Degree or Diploma in Human Resources Management, Industrial Relations, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in an HR Generalist role.
- Hands‑on experience with independent payroll processing is essential.
- Practical experience in South African employment legislation, recruitment, EE, and Skills Development.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (specifically Excel).
- Experience in retail or multi‑site environments is highly advantageous.
- Valid driver's licence and own reliable vehicle.
