Job Description

To perform the role of Head of Department Technical Services (HOD Technical Services) within the Mineralogy division. The responsibilities and authorities of the HOD Technical Services in Mineralogy in relation to post requirements of technical and key support personnel are outlined:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day technical coordination and operation of the Mineralogy division, including operation and maintenance of the XRD and AUTOSEMs.
  • Responsible for the effective and efficient running of the mineralogical equipment (AUTOSEM, XRD, Optical Microscopes, Carbon Coater etc) with very low downtimes (percentage availability).
  • Assist management with work routing, formulating changes, improving workflow and maximum utilization of resources in the department.
  • Will need to take on some technical projects as needed when the workload requires it.
  • Assist management in achieving TAT and the technical execution of all projects in the division.
  • Coordinate with the mineralogist best execution of Mineralogy projects, including Metallurgy and chemistry.
  • Assist management with the development, effective utilization and supervision of human resources in Bryanston, including training, recruitment and discipline.
  • Responsible for the quality control of accurate mineralogical data and high-quality technical reports delivered on schedule and within budget ensuring client satisfaction for all projects in Mineralogy.
  • Assist with results evaluation and troubleshooting.
  • Keep abreast of new trends and current developments in Mineralogy.
  • Provide input for larger technical proposals for complex deposits and appropriate mineralogy approach.
  • Work is scheduled and carried out promptly, and relevant quality benchmarks are maintained for the mineralogist team to execute work in Bryanston.
  • Lead weekly production meetings with the Mineralogist in Bryanston with input from the manager and HOD for Lab and administration.
  • Responsible for arranging technical talks of projects (from Staff) within the division bi-monthly to include the sample preparation team at the Bryanston office.
  • Provide input in CAPEX needs of the Mineralogy Division (Bryanston Technical work) to the Mineralogy Manager.
  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.

Perform any other reasonable task as assigned by the direct line manager.

Qualifications
  • B.Sc Hons in Geology
  • 15 years experience in Mineralogy Investigations
  • Project Management experience will be an advantage.
