Highway Maintenance Specialist - Hanging Lake Tunnel (Glenwood Springs - CDL Training Provided)

CDOT has a vacancy for a Highway Maintenance Specialist in Glenwood Springs, CO, and will provide training to obtain your CDL. This position requires that you obtain your CDL Permit within 30 days of hire and your CDL Class A or B shortly thereafter as a condition of continued employment.

This position will require either a pre-employment drug test (if you currently have a regular driver's license) or a DOT drug test (if you already have your CDL Permit or CDL) as a pre-employment step.

As part of the process to obtain your CDL permit, you will be required to take a DOT physical and DOT drug test. Total annual compensation for this position is $58,000 ($52,000 base pay and $6,000 housing stipend).

Base pay for this position is $2,000 biweekly ($52,000 annually).

There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

This location is also eligible for an additional $300/month housing stipend.

Description Of Job

What You Will Do

No two days are exactly the same in CDOT highway maintenance. Your daily work activities change based on project needs and also vary based on weather, environment, and road conditions. You will be on-call on a rotating basis and respond to weather and other emergencies. You will typically work in a team environment with at least one lead highway maintenance specialist and multiple highway maintenance specialists.

Your main job activities include:

  1. Plowing snow
  2. Operating heavy equipment, such as tandem dump truck, loader, tractor mower, etc.
  3. Mowing grass and weeds
  4. Removing debris from roadways, including rock, mud, and deceased animals
  5. Removing debris from culverts, tunnels, etc.
  6. Shoveling gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt
  7. Digging ditches
  8. Installing and repairing guardrail, highway markers and signs, warning signs, and lighting
  9. Filling potholes and roadway cracks
  10. Setting out signs and cones for traffic control
  11. Removing and covering graffiti
  12. Installing pavement markings / striping
  13. Stopping or slowing traffic in emergency situations
  14. Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs
  15. Following safety guidance and wearing proper safety equipment

Your Work Environment

Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, gases, dusts, and chemicals. Use of personal protective equipment required. Work near traffic, sometimes at high speeds. Use ladders and lifts for heights of approximately 10'-20'. Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular hours, work overtime, and in extreme temperatures.

Minimum Qualifications

At least two years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience. Must possess a valid driver's license and obtain a CDL Permit within 30 days of hire. Must pass DOT physical and drug test. Must obtain and maintain a CDL Class A or B with no restrictions on air brakes within days of hire. Must pass a pre-employment screening.

Conditions of Employment

On-call work, essential services designation, and potential requirement to live within 30 minutes of work site. Training provided via computer. Willingness to respond to emergencies outside regular hours, including weekends and holidays.
