A leading company in bulk materials handling is looking for a skilled truck driver responsible for both transportation and maintenance of equipment. The role involves ensuring safety, performing inspections, and planning delivery routes effectively.
General procedures
• Receive transport assignment from supervisor
• Ensure telephone contact with supervisor
• Fill up vehicle with the correct type of fuel and provide supervisor with the correct documentation
• Load and off-loading equipment, material or parts – ensure goods are secured properly and compliant with safety requirements and take ownership and responsibility for goods when loaded/off-loaded
• Transfer of ownership as soon as the goods has been delivered safely without any damage or discrepancies
• Ensure all relevant documentation – delivery notes, quality release notes etc. accompanies the load
• Plan routes and ensure safest, shortest and most effective route is selected
• Operating the truck mounted crane
o Identifying the safety work limits and suitability of the crane
o Take cognisance of access, obstructions, field of vision, insecure and unstable loads
o Select the most appropriate gear and equipment for freight characteristics and environmental conditions
• Drivers may work long working hours including weekends and public holidays
• Long distance deliveries may require sleepover in vehicle if adequately equipped – ensure during such periods that the truck and load is safe and secure, thus continued ownership and responsibility, display reasonable measures to prevent negligence and losses
• Carry out any other reasonable duties required by supervisor
Duties and activities during the trip
• Always ensure road safety, follow appropriate traffic-, company- and client laws, policies, procedures and regulations
• Report delays due to traffic or unforeseen circumstances to supervisor immediately
• Have delivery notes signed and indicate the time and name of person who signed for the delivery
• Relay any feedback or complaints received to the supervisor
• Always be vigilant when driving to ensure safe travel with regards to load, road condition, traffic and possible dangers like hijacking and accidents
Maintenance of vehicles/trucks
• Perform pre-trip, en-route and post-trip inspection of vehicles
• Make sure vehicle are in a roadworthy condition at all times
• Keep interior and exterior of vehicles clean and tidy. Equipment must be tidy and in working order
• Inspecting and recording the operational fitness of the components of the crane
• Report any incidents to supervisor
• Perform preventative and regular maintenance to minimise breakdowns
• In the event of an accident, immediately report to supervisor. The driver might be required to attend to minor problems, and manage related issues/damages
• Plan services according to manufacturer’s servicing requirements and make sure service intervals are not exceeded
• Plan services according to planned trips to minimise interruptions and delays of deliveries
