Job description

The primary responsibility of the Health & Safety Officer is to ensure that all workers on the construction site are working in a safe environment and are following all correct health & safety procedures. The major tasks, duties, and responsibilities are listed below:

  1. Assist the appointed H&S Consultant with the preparation of construction projects health and safety files / plan.
  2. Assist the appointed Risk Assessor, Fall Protection Planner developing documents.
  3. Confirm necessary documentation was submitted to the relevant authorities.
  4. Attend project planning meetings.
  5. Assessments and approval of subcontractor(s) health and safety files.
  6. Attend regular site, technical and progress meetings.
  7. Facilitate site health and safety meetings.
  8. Identification of the hazards and risks relevant to the construction project through regular coordinated site inspections.
  9. Establish and maintain health and safety communication structures and systems, distribution of health and safety specific documents to sub-contractors.
  10. Compiling project specific emergency response and preparedness plans.
  11. Testing the effectiveness of the emergency response plans.
  12. Conduct site Health & safety inductions.
  13. Evaluate the levels of compliance of subcontractors to the project specific health and safety file / plan and client specifications through inspections and audits.
  14. Assist appointed Accident / Incident investigator / Oversee the reporting and investigation of project related incidents / accidents.
  15. Assist Contract manager’s / Site agents with developing method statements site specific.
  16. Oversee the maintenance of all records.
  17. Conduct toolbox meetings.
  18. Promotes safe practices on site.
  19. Enforces health & safety guidelines.
  20. Establishes Health & safety standards and policies as needed.
  21. Responds to employees’ health & safety concerns.

Key skills for Health & Safety Officer

  1. Decision-making ability.
  2. Ability to motivate others.
  3. Good knowledge of building methods and regulations.

Minimum requirements

  1. At least 3 years’ experience in construction work.
  2. Valid driver’s license.
  3. Introduction to SAMTRAC.
  4. SAMTRAC.
  5. HIRAC.
  6. ASHEPP.
  7. Registration with the SACPCMP.
  8. Valid competency certificates for Scaffolding Inspector, Supervisor & Scaffolding Erector, 1ST Aider, Firefighting and Asbestos work would be advantages.
  9. Medically fit.

Salary: R15 000 – R25 000 per month.
