Job summary

A leading company in Johannesburg is seeking a Construction Health and Safety Practitioner to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. The ideal candidate will possess a recognized health and safety qualification and demonstrate expertise in mentoring and guiding health and safety representatives. Responsibilities include identifying hazards, implementing controls, and ensuring continuous professional development compliance.

Qualifications

  • Formal qualification in Occupational Health and Safety registered with SAQA.
  • Registered with SACPCMP and other professional bodies.
  • Compliance with Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Support construction management and monitor implementation controls.
  • Anticipate, identify and evaluate hazardous conditions.
  • Design and implement hazard control systems.

Skills

Job description

Construction Health and Safety Practitioners shall be expected to demonstrate detailed knowledge of construction health and safety requirements at their respective operational levels :

CHSO - Safety Officer / CHSM - Safety Manager / Pr CHSA - Safety Agent

Must have the ability to support construction management and identify relevant legal requirements and monitor continuous implementation controls.

A Construction Health and Safety Practitioner shall also be required to show ability to mentor, coach and guide construction health and safety representatives.

Recognised Health and Safety qualification :

Any formal qualification having Occupational Health and Safety as its main subjects should be registered with SAQA as a qualification.

This includes any international qualification evaluated by SAQA as a recognised health and safety qualification.

Construction Health and Safety Practitioner Services

The activities and processes required to :

Anticipate, identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices.

Design / develop hazard control systems, methods, procedures and programs.

Implement, administer and advise others on hazard controls and hazard control programmes.

Measure, audit and evaluate the effectiveness of hazard controls and hazard control programmes.

Analyse incidents to identify deficiencies in the health and safety management systems.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Construction Health and Safety Practitioners are required to comply with the Continuing Professional Development Policy Framework of the respective Statutory body - SACPCMP.

As per the SACPCMPS policy, failure to comply with the CPD requirement for the five (5) year cycle will result in the de-registration of the Construction Health and Safety Practitioner.

Recognition of registration with other Health and Safety Professional Bodies / Voluntary Associations

All Practitioners must be registered as a member of the professional body - SACPCMP

All Practitioners should also be registered with Voluntary Associations such as SAIOSH, MBA, ACHASM, IIRSM etc.

Demonstration of knowledge :

Regulatory requirements regarding construction health and safety and its links to the health and safety management system.

Health and safety management systems and the key components of an effective system.

Principles of cause-and-effect analysis and its application to hazard identification and risk management on a project.

Principles of developing and implementing safe working practices.

Criteria and standards for effective documentation and document control.

Concepts and principles of developing an emergency preparedness plan and process for key approval, rehearsal and implementation steps.

Concept of behavioural safety management.

Construction health and safety management

The principles of human resources planning and management and its application to the health and safety management system.

Concepts and principles of interpretation and the use of occupational hygiene survey results.

Health and safety project communication requirements.

Health and safety documentation and document control.

Project emergency preparedness, planning and implementation.

The principles of developing and implementing safe working procedures.

The evaluation of health and safety training requirements for a specific project.

The application of monitoring tools and technical reports related to occupational health and safety.

Safety in Design review principles.

Health and safety performance measurement and monitoring

Project health and safety compliance auditing internal, external and third party.

Legal compliance audits and inspections.

Project health and safety reporting.

Analysis of audit results and trends - continual improvement.

Verification of implementation and close out of corrective actions.

Principles and leading practices associated with continuous improvement.
