Job description

We are seeking a seasoned and proactive Health & Safety Manager to spearhead the safety, environmental, risk, and quality (SHERQ) functions for a leading entity in bulk commodity supply chain solutions. This pivotal role reports directly to our SHEQ Executive Head and is critical in ensuring stringent adherence to regulatory standards, fostering sustainable practices, and driving continuous improvement across all facets of our extensive operations, including warehousing, transportation, and port logistics.

If you thrive on mitigating risks, optimizing processes, and nurturing a safe, compliant, and efficient workplace, this opportunity is for you!

What youll be doing :

  • Safety & Wellness Oversight : Craft, execute, and uphold comprehensive safety and health frameworks in alignment with the OHS Act and other pertinent statutes. Perform routine hazard evaluations, compliance checks, and site walkthroughs across various operational sites, particularly those involving bulk handling and logistics. Direct inquiries into operational incidents, ensuring thorough root cause analysis and the implementation of effective preventive measures. Conduct essential safety and wellness training programs for staff and contractors, emphasizing practices in high-risk areas like loading and transport of large-scale commodities. Oversee and ensure adherence to personal protective equipment standards and safe work methodologies.
  • Environmental Stewardship : Uphold environmental standards and sustainability objectives, especially in bulk material handling and distribution. Track resource consumption, waste streams, and emissions, actively working to minimize environmental impact, including managing dust and preventing spills. Carry out environmental impact studies for our port operations, transport routes, and storage facilities, developing robust mitigation strategies. Maintain meticulous records and submit all necessary environmental reports to regulatory bodies.
  • Risk Mitigation : Pinpoint, evaluate, and reduce operational hazards across warehousing, transport, and port activities. Steward the organizational risk registry, ensuring that controls are effectively implemented for bulk commodity logistics. Formulate and deploy robust continuity and emergency protocols for potential disruptions, including transport failures and equipment malfunctions.
  • Quality Assurance : Supervise the establishment and upkeep of quality assurance frameworks, adhering to ISO 9001 standards, to ensure precise and efficient handling of large-volume goods. Execute internal compliance reviews to assess system adherence and identify areas for enhancement within logistics and supply chain processes. Track and assess quality benchmarks such as tonnage accuracy and loading efficiency, implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Regulatory Adherence & Reporting : Guarantee full adherence to pertinent statutory and regulatory requirements and certifications (e.g., OHS Act, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001). Compile and present comprehensive SHEQ reports to senior management and relevant authorities, including port and logistics regulators. Remain current on legislative shifts and industry standards, particularly those impacting bulk commodities and logistics, and communicate these updates to stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration : Cultivate strong relationships with internal teams, contractors, and external entities, including maritime authorities and logistics partners, to champion a culture of safety and compliance. Act as the company representative during compliance reviews and inspections related to bulk material handling. Offer expert SHEQ guidance and support to management and employees, ensuring alignment with operational and customer needs.
  • Team Leadership : Direct and nurture the SHEQ team, offering clear guidance and steadfast support. Define team performance criteria and goals, ensuring alignment with overarching organizational objectives. Cultivate an environment of ongoing enhancement and professional growth within the team, with a focus on operations involving large-scale materials and logistics.

Who were looking for :

  • Educational Background : A relevant diploma or degree is essential, ideally in the fields of Occupational Safety, Environmental Stewardship, or Risk Oversight, or a closely related discipline.
  • Professional Credentials : Possession of key health and safety certifications such as SAMTRAC or NEBOSH, or equivalent qualifications. Added certifications in environmental or quality systems (like ISO 9001, 14001, 45001) would be a strong plus.
  • Professional Journey : At least 5 to 7 years in a senior management capacity, specifically overseeing safety, health, environmental, risk, and quality functions. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in the movement of bulk goods, supply chain management, or associated sectors.
  • Sector-Specific Insight : In-depth knowledge of local health, safety, and environmental regulations in South Africa. Proven experience with the procedures for handling large-scale materials, transportation networks, and maritime logistics is crucial.
  • Core Aptitudes : Superior communication abilities, adeptness at resolving complex issues, and robust organizational prowess. Competence with standard office software and specialized SHERQ management platforms is expected.

Your Attributes :

  • You possess a meticulous eye for detail and a proactive stance in addressing operational challenges, especially within large-scale material handling and supply chain environments.
  • Your leadership and interpersonal finesse enable you to effectively influence and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, from maritime authorities to logistics partners.
  • You thrive in dynamic, high-pressure situations, skillfully juggling numerous objectives.
  • A sharp analytical mind, capable of deriving insights from data for strategic decision-making, is key.

This role is primarily office-based but requires regular site visits to warehousing, transport, and port operations. Occasional travel may be necessary for training, audits, or meetings. You must be prepared to work in a dynamic and high-risk environment typical of bulk commodities and logistics.
