Job description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Health & Safety Manager to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing policies, procedures, and programs to ensure the health and safety of our employees, contractors, and visitors on all our job sites. This is a full-time permanent position based in our main office in East London, but travel is required to the various branches and sites across the country.

DUTIES

  • Ensure employees follow health and safety regulations and protocols.
  • Conduct employee and contractor inductions in line with current Group procedure.
  • Monitor the removal of biological, physical, or chemical hazards from the workplace.
  • Provide safety training for employees and, when required, contractors on policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Compile, monitor, and submit ATR and WPS for specified Companies within the Group.
  • Advise the various administrative teams on safety issues and compliance in specific projects and operations.
  • Inspect and verify Company compliance with relevant safety regulations and ensure Safety Files are kept up to date at all times.
  • Maintain accurate and current records in accordance with guidelines.
  • Analyse incident reports, metrics, and injury case studies in order to institute changes that lead to a safer environment.
  • Attend to annual medicals, random drug tests, breathalyser tests, and Injuries on Duty.
  • Apply for permits, purchase health and safety equipment, ensure employees have the appropriate certifications to operate heavy machinery, and set standards for testing and maintenance to prevent dangerous malfunctions.
  • Ensure employees and contractors wear the correct Personal Protective Equipment for the type of work they are doing.
  • Handle DoEL Safety Audits.
  • Keep record of and ensure that the Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate is calculated monthly.
  • Conduct monthly inspections of sites, document, and load onto the server.
  • Monitor and train Health and Safety Representatives/Officers to ensure monthly inspections are conducted and logged.
  • Where nonconformance and issues are noted, log accordingly and manage to completion.
  • Ensure legal appointments are all in place.
  • Compile a monthly OHS Report containing all OHS related matters (incidents, accidents, new policies, building condition, nonconformances logged). In future, Environmental Social Governance must be included and reported upon.
  • Conduct regular toolbox talks with workers.
  • Ensure that Policies stay updated with changes in legislation.
  • Investigate all incidents and accidents and put measures in place to mitigate reoccurrence.
  • Host quarterly Health and Safety related information sessions for employees.
  • Develop an annual OHS Plan for the Group.
  • Ensure tight contractor management during any type of construction or works, ensure buildings are compliant and that our own employees' Occupational Health and Safety needs are catered for.
  • Any other reasonable and lawful instructions within the scope of works.

Requirements

  • SACPCMP registration.
  • Working on heights qualification (accredited training certificate).
  • Fall Protection Planner qualification (accredited training certificate).
  • Preliminary Incident Investigation qualification (accredited training certificate).
  • Registered in terms of SACPCMP as a CHSO Candidate; CHSO will also be acceptable certificate.
  • At least 5 years experience in the HSE environment, preferably in Construction.
  • Experience in the implementation and maintenance of safety systems in the workplace according to the OHS ACT & Regulations.
  • Driver's licence.
  • Proven track record of implementing and maintaining successful health and safety programs.
