Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Lead Materials Scientist to head a team in George, Western Cape. You will guide research from concept to application, drive materials discovery, and shape future technologies with a focus on synthesis, characterization, and performance testing.

You will mentor researchers, manage projects, collaborate with product development and manufacturing, publish findings, and ensure safety. The role requires a Ph.D., 8+ years in materials science, and a proven leadership track

Qualifications

• PhD in Materials Science or a related field.
• At least 8 years of progressive R&D in materials science with 3+ years in leadership.
• Experience with synthesis and characterization techniques (e.g., sol-gel, CVD, SEM, TEM, XRD).
• Proven track record in developing and commercializing new materials.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of materials scientists and engineers in designing, synthesizing, and characterizing novel materials.
• Develop and implement strategic research plans to achieve objectives and drive innovation.
• Oversee experimental design, data acquisition, and analysis of material properties and performance.
• Collaborate with product development, engineering, and manufacturing to ensure integration.
• Identify new technologies, methodologies, and potential research partnerships.
• Publish findings in high-impact journals and present at international conferences.
• Ensure safety regulations and lab best practices are followed.
• Mentor junior researchers and foster a high-performing team culture.
• Manage project budgets, timelines, and resources.
• Stay updated on advancements in materials science and related disciplines.
