About the Role

Our client, a highly regarded independent secondary school located in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape , is seeking an accomplished and inspirational leader to serve as the Head of Department for Natural Sciences. This senior leadership role is responsible for overseeing the curriculum, staff, and pedagogical direction of the Biology, Chemistry, and Physics departments. The ideal candidate will possess a strong academic background in a natural science discipline, extensive teaching experience, and proven leadership capabilities. Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and direction for the Natural Sciences Department.
• Oversee the development, implementation, and review of the Natural Sciences curriculum across all relevant year groups.
• Manage and mentor a team of qualified science teachers, fostering their professional growth and development.
• Ensure the delivery of high-quality science education, promoting student engagement and academic achievement.
• Develop and implement effective assessment strategies for the department.
• Manage departmental budgets and resources, ensuring efficient allocation and utilization.
• Promote scientific literacy and a passion for scientific exploration among students.
• Liaise with other department heads and school leadership to ensure cohesive educational planning and delivery.
• Maintain high standards of teaching and learning, and ensure compliance with national educational regulations.
• Organize and oversee science-related extracurricular activities, such as science clubs and competitions.

Requirements

• A Master's degree or equivalent in a Natural Science discipline (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics).
• A relevant teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, HED) and at least 8 years of teaching experience at the secondary school level.
• Demonstrated experience in a leadership or management role within an educational setting (e.g., Head of Department, Coordinator).
• Strong understanding of science education best practices, curriculum design, and assessment methodologies.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Proven ability to inspire and motivate both students and staff.
• Experience in managing departmental budgets and resources.
• Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and management.
• A commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
