Job description

PURPOSE OF ROLE

As the Head of Department (HOD) for accounting, you will report directly to the CFO. In this strategic leadership role, you will manage and direct the performance of the Accounts Department. This role requires a dynamic professional who can drive financial accuracy, statutory and regulatory compliance, tax efficiency, management of treasury and strategic reporting while optimizing processes and developing team capabilities. You will be responsible for maintaining excellent employer relationships within your team and fostering strong client relationships.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Financial Reporting and Compliance
  • Oversee monthly Group reporting and ensure accurate general ledger reconciliations
  • Prepare and review IFS (ERP System) and consolidation processes
  • Ensure proper GL mapping in IFS for meaningful financial reporting
  • Prepare monthly reports and variance analyses on results
  • Conduct monthly and quarterly forecasting as required by Group
  • Ensure compliance with local and international reporting standards,
  • Implement relevant accounting policies and procedures

Taxation Management

  • Tax planning and advisory on projects
  • Prepare annual tax calculations and submit tax returns
  • Control all SARS-related payments for accuracy and timeliness
  • Review financial systems to ensure VAT calculations align with SARS requirements

Audit and Financial Control

  • Manage annual external and internal audits and processes
  • Prepare technically correct Annual Financial Statements in compliance with IFRS
  • Review and enhance cost control measures
  • Develop comprehensive monthly cost reporting
  • Establish forums to discuss actual vs budget costing

Treasury Management

  • Management of treasury functions and regulatory compliance
  • Control all third-party payments, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
  • Conduct weekly/monthly cash forecasting to optimize resources

Process Improvement

  • Develop meaningful financial reports for business decision-making
  • Create suitable interfaces between accounting and reporting systems
  • Implement process improvements for automated month-end reporting
  • Optimisation of the payment system

Team Leadership and Development

  • Ensure all financial staff are adequately trained to perform their duties
  • Implement succession planning, career paths, and performance management
  • Effectively manage the finance team with a focus on development and growth
  • Drive adherence to strict reporting deadlines

QUALIFICATION

  • Chartered Accountant (CA).

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 years post-article experience, preferably in Project Engineering or Construction environments
  • 5-10 years' experience in a leadership role
  • Demonstrated experience with ERP systems (IFS)

  • Comprehensive knowledge of South African tax legislation and SARS requirements
