PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Head of Campus Sports (Co-Curricular) is responsible for the strategic vision, leadership, and operational management of Redhill School’s entire co-curricular sports programme across all phases of the school. This role is vital in promoting physical education, team spirit, holistic development, and a culture of excellence, participation, and inclusivity in sport. The role ensures alignment between the school’s co-curricular offerings and its overall educational philosophy, providing opportunities for all students to thrive through meaningful engagement in physical activity and team-based pursuits.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership and Vision

  • Develop and implement a campus-wide strategy for sports that reflects the ethos of Redhill School and its commitment to holistic education.
  • Promote a balanced programme that nurtures both high-performance athletes and broad-based participation.
  • Align the co-curricular sports programme with the school’s academic calendar, inclusion principles, and student wellbeing goals.
  • Oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of the full co-curricular sports calendar across all seasons and campuses (Junior, Middle, and Senior Schools).
  • Ensure equitable access to resources, coaches, and sporting opportunities across age groups and skill levels.

Staffing and Coaching Leadership

  • Recruit, manage, and mentor a high-performing team of internal and external coaches.
  • Establish clear expectations, developmental feedback mechanisms, and performance appraisal systems for coaching staff.
  • Oversee training schedules, fixtures, duty allocations, and the professional conduct of all staff involved in co-curricular sport.

Student Participation and Development

  • Champion student participation, encouraging involvement from a diverse student body and ensuring gender equity in all programmes.
  • Identify and nurture sporting talent through appropriate high-performance pathways and opportunities.
  • Support students’ physical and emotional wellbeing through structured engagement in sport.

Partnerships, Fixtures and Communication

  • Manage local, regional, and international sporting relationships, leagues, and tournaments.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, staff, and external bodies regarding fixtures, team selection, travel, and expectations.
  • Ensure that all communications reflect the school’s professionalism and culture.

Administration and Compliance

  • Oversee budgets, inventories, schedules, transport logistics, and facility use for all co-curricular sporting activities.
  • Ensure that all sporting activities comply with health and safety regulations, safeguarding protocols, and school policies.
  • Maintain detailed data on student participation, team performance, and coach engagement.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS

  • Executive Head and Heads of Schools.
  • Director of Operations and Facilities Team.
  • Marketing, Admissions, and Community Engagement teams.
  • Parent groups, sporting associations, and partner schools.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sports Science, Physical Education, Education, or a related field (postgraduate qualification preferred).
  • A minimum of 7–10 years of experience in sports management, education, or co-curricular programming, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Experience in school-based sports programming (independent school experience preferred).
  • Strong understanding of South African and international school sports contexts.
