Job description

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Accountable for managing the financial control function within Bidvest Bank and subsidiaries.

Includes the development of a financial and operational strategy, metrics tied to the strategy, and the ongoing development and monitoring of control systems designed to preserve company assets and report accurate financial results.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS (KPA's) AND KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI's)
OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE

Financial control

  • Lead and direct all functions of the Bank's financial control department, including finance operations, financial & statutory reporting, tax and VAT, debtors and creditors.
  • Lead and direct all functions of the Bank's related financial processes, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversee implementation and management of key financial controls across all functions of the Bank.
  • Manage year-end audit process, including Bidvest Group financial year packs and the Bank's annual financial statements within regulatory timelines.
  • Manage all Bidvest Group finance-related matters for Bidvest Bank and related entities.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve financial processes through innovation, automation, and efficiencies.
  • Lead and direct Bank-wide cost-saving initiatives to reduce the cost-to-income ratio annually.
  • Assist the CFO with controls, accounting, IT systems projects, and financial matters as required.
  • Handle technical financial accounting and structuring on Bank and corporate finance matters.
  • Participate as a member of the Finance Manco Committee.
CUSTOMER CENTRICITY & DAILY OPERATIONS
  • Advise on market best practices for Financial Control functions and implement operational best practices.
  • Monitor the implementation of strategic objectives.
  • Take initiative in problem-solving with a solution-driven mindset.
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal departments and external parties.
  • Act in the best interest of the Bank at all times.
  • Ensure functions are delivered within prescribed and regulatory timelines.
  • Manage relationships with the Bank's Executive Committee and management.
GOVERNANCE & RISK MANAGEMENT
  • Maintain a strong financial control environment with best practice processes and controls.
  • Address audit matters timely and implement controls to prevent future findings, aiming for low risk findings.
  • Identify and communicate potential risks and relevant mitigating controls.
  • Lead all financial operational risk management in the Bank.
  • Participate in the Bank's audit committee and other relevant committees as required.

REQUIREMENTS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Qualification: CA(SA).
  • Experience: 5+ years managing the entire financial control function; 5-8 years within the industry; experience in an auditing firm is ideal.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Strong understanding of Financial Control, statutory reporting, technical accounting, procurement, and taxation within the Bank.
  • Expertise in Tax Legislation, Principles, Accounting Standards, and Reporting Frameworks.
  • Knowledge of internal policies and procedures.
  • Ability to operate effectively under pressure.
  • Integrity, management, and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of banking products and source system to GL reconciliations.
  • Experience managing external and internal audits.
  • Experience working in a Banking Financial Control environment.
