Job description

Phanda Personnel is urgently seeking a motivated and organised individual with a student/customer-centred approach for a temporary 3-month position within the Student Housing Residence Facilities. The role requires someone currently based in Cape Town and available to start immediately.

Requirements

  • Grade 10
  • 5 years of relevant technical and building maintenance experience (including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, locks, and furniture repair)
  • Effective reporting, organising, and monitoring of assigned work
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Good customer focus and interpersonal skills
  • Sound verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer literacy with basic proficiency in MS Office
  • Basic numeracy skills
  • Alertness and ability to think quickly in an emergency
  • Ability to cope in a highly stressful environment
  • Flexibility to work according to the department's operational hours and overtime when required
  • Awareness of The Occupational Health and Safety Act No 85 of 1993

Responsibilities

  • Effective planning, coordinating, executing, and monitoring of minor and planned maintenance at residence level
  • Accountability for handling and securing tools in compliance with maintenance standard operating procedures

  • Monitoring health and safety within the residences and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards and procedures

About The Employer

Student Housing & Residence Life primarily offers a living and learning experience to students during the academic term. Facilities are managed year-round, with residences also used to accommodate guests during vacation periods. Workload peaks at the start and end of semesters, and annual leave is taken by agreement.

The main purpose of this position is to provide effective handy person maintenance services across residences. Applicants should be medically fit and capable of tasks such as walking, climbing stairs, entering confined spaces, and working at heights. A medical assessment will be required. Staff are appointed to a pool and may be allocated to different residences based on operational needs.
