Overview
Cape Town-based Grid and Electrical Engineer role, within the Engineering team. Involves supporting the Project Development Life Cycle across all stages, with grid-focused technical input to Operations and Maintenance. Frequent internal stakeholder coordination and engagement with external partners. Leads project engineering efforts across a portfolio from development through construction.
Grid responsibilities
- Ensure grid compliance by coordinating with OEMs on plant specifications; approve changes and prepare new addition specs.
- Prepare documentation for regulatory submissions and liaise with relevant authorities for statutory evaluations.
- Manage exemption requests, evaluate new products for integration, and perform regular tests to confirm compliance with grid codes.
- Analyse installed equipment to stay aligned with modern tech; implement necessary updates.
- Support construction team with utility interactions, grid connection, and energisation.
- Conduct grid and power quality audits; investigate non-compliance, document mitigants, and create training material.
- Monitor technical solutions, system performance, and implement improvements.
- Ensure regular monitoring / reporting per agreements and grid codes; update facility power curves.
- Compile monthly generation reports for regulators; conduct grid assessments on development projects; provide grid studies and scope of work to projects.
- Manage budget quotes, cost estimate letters, and liaise with transmission authorities.
- Support senior grid engineers in reviewing national grid / transmission codes and apply learnings to designs.
Electrical responsibilities
- Deliver conceptual and detailed electrical / grid designs for renewable energy projects (substations, MV collector layouts, diagrams).
- Assist with technical design package reviews during pre-construction; lead project engineering from development to handover.
- Review and update Employer’s Requirements (ERs); implement ER templates for new projects and regional rollouts; draft ER content for new technologies and markets.
- Capture lessons learned with regional teams and apply to ERs and study scopes; liaise with contractors and external parties on ER content.
- Enforce ERs across site documentation and inspections; contribute to updating engineering procedures, standards, and ISO documentation.
- Participate in ongoing training (local and international) and professional development; share knowledge across teams.
- Manage electrical / grid engineering standards (ISO, IEC, etc.) and ensure accessibility within the engineering ecosystem.
- Review external electrical / grid consultancy services; integrate findings into designs, due diligence, and investment papers.
- Contribute to technical content for due diligence and acquisition opportunities; assess constructibility of green-field and acquisition projects.
- Engage with external consultants, lenders, and utility / Grid entities to advance development projects.
- Produce technical reports and presentations for leadership and governance bodies as required.
- Ensure adherence to health and safety regulations; participate in company-wide digitalisation and innovation programs; design and implement grid-related processes aligned with digitalisation strategy.
Requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- About 5 years of experience in project engineering / development for renewable energy (wind and / or solar).
- Valid registration with professional engineering body.
- Experience with medium / high voltage plant design and equipment specs.
- Familiarity with national grid codes / compliance in one or more markets.
- Experience drafting technical specifications and related documents.
- Strong written and verbal English skills; excellent report-writing ability.
- Strong IT proficiency.
- Ability to work under pressure, adapt to changing objectives, and meet deadlines.
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and well-organized with good time management.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally; valid passport and driver’s license; ability to stay connected during travel.
