Job Title: Graphic Designer

Job Purpose:
Design advertisements according to specifications of the client to a production deadline and lay out advertisement and/or editorial pages for the newspapers to deadline.
Check completed advertisements from own marketing department and agencies.
Minimum Requirements:
- 3 year Diploma Media studies / Journalism with certified graphic design
- Grade 12 plus 6 years experience in design, preferred newspaper design Computer literate Have experience and sound knowledge of standard layout programs for example the Adobe Creative Suite (Required version 3. Preferred version 5 and up) or Quark X Press (version 7 and up)

Key Performance Areas:
- Layout editorial pages
- Design advertisements
- Edit video material for digital platforms and events
- Keeping the archive in order and up to date
- Deliver complete and approved PDF pages to newsprint
- Calibration and quality control of images (pictures/illustrations)
- Able to adjust designs according to the style guide of the newspaper
- Organise weekly meetings with design team
- Report to Supervisor and Production Director on a weekly basis
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Layout of the newspaper pages according to the style of the paper to ensure consistency in layout and design
- Production and design of advertisements according to the wishes of the client and design guidelines of newspaper to ensure consistency of complete look and feel of the paper
- Maintain integration of news worthiness and typographical design, to enhance quality of paper
- Develops and executes charts, tables, diagrams, logos, maps and other information graphics on a timely basis and in accordance with the papers style and format to enhance visual illustration of editorial content
- Responsible for meeting a newsroom production timetable and printing press deadlines to ensure timely delivery for paper for printing
- Cooperates closely with the supervisor to determine the best layout design for a page and paper as a whole product
- Inset the correct numbering of pages, headlines, dates, logos and labels of the pages he/she lays out. In this regard he/ she cooperates closely with the editor on duty and the proofreader to contribute to integrity and accuracy of the paper
- Is responsible for completeness of data saved on an electronic medium used for the transferring of full page data to the printer to make sure a page can be processed
- When electronic news management system is implemented, the graphic designer will ensure that data is archived to ensure effective database for future reference
- Submit PDF pages according to specific deadline time to web department to ensure websites are up-to-date and go live when needed
- Review and re-design own pages to improve navigation and/ or rhythm in the paper to make sure paper is according to given standards
- Calibrate and control images to ensure the quality ready for printing
- Adhere to deadlines set for designing, correcting, print production and quality control of the complete newspaper, special projects and third party clients
